Key modification?

I know there's a transponder of sorts in the ignition key but I was wondering if it's a part of the key blade itself or is it embedded in the plastic? I was asking because I saw this on reddit and thought it looked neat:

That's actually pretty damn cool, though I would caution you from doing something like that because ignition cylinders are not typically designed to have that much weight hanging off them (poorly designed GM cylinders included.)

A lot of aftermarket radio/alarm shops will cut a key apart and tape/glue the transponder to the cylinder/antennae so that it bypasses the immobilizer. The thing to remember here is that if you go this route, you've eliminated a key security feature of your vehicle and have only the mechanical key lock cylinder to prevent someone from breaking in and starting the vehicle.

What I would do if it was me, is I would hide a key that has the transponder in the plastic head somewhere in the cargo area and then get this key attachment to the leatherman, or gerber and use it as a (OOPS) I locked myself out, or I lost my key.

Granted of course you always have said tool in your pocket. The key can get you in but not start your truck.

For people with transponder ignitions ( I have a 99 so not included) I always tell them to get just a mechanical key (not transponder, just steel) and place it in one of those hide-a-key deals. That way if someone found it they can open your doors but not start your vehicle. Then, have a transponder key hidden in your truck so you can be mobile if your original key is lost.

:iagree: That knife/tool would be a lot of weight bouncing around on the ignition switch innards. I like my leatherman in the belt holder.

I didn't think about the weight of it all, probably smart to not do it. Looked neat though.

Not to mention you might run into issues if you go to places where metal detectors are used.
