Thanks, I'll try that out. It didn't seem to do it before, though. My Miata doesn't have that problem either (it's just impossible to put it in reverse at times, but it doesn't grind).

So I changed the transmission oil in my 1991 4Runner 5 speed with 75w90 GL4 Redline oil. Before the change the transmission was a bit notchy, but that was it. After the change now, the transmission is still notchy but now grinds going into reverse. I am thinking it might be related to my oil...

My first big maintenance on my 4Runner will be coming up this weekend! Changing all the oils this weekend. I guess the *first* thing I did was to go to the junkyard and get a few interior pieces (headrest, passenger side front sill, etc).

One last question (I think): how can I tell if I have the automatic differential disconnect? I think I have it because it looks like I can't change anything manually on the front hubs but I'm not completely sure. The manual says you need different amounts of oil depending on if you have the ADD...

This is for a 1991 4Runner V6 5speed 4x4. I want to replace all the oil in my 4Runner (engine, transmission, transfer case and diffs). I see that the service manual asks for 75W90 oil and says GL3, GL4 and GL5 all work. Which one is the best to go with? I've heard that GL5 can eat brass...

Thanks! I just did that and got the manual. I'm going to replace all the oil in the truck in the next two weeks or so. I guess I'll start a thread in the appropriate section for advice on the best oil to use, though.

Thanks everyone! I will try and do the diff fluid at some point. I was going to jack up the entire thing and see if all 4 wheels spun, but driving it around in a parking lot seems easier. Is there a go-to manual for these trucks? When I had my Volvo 240, everyone recommended the Bentley...
