Hello. I tow a lot with my 2021 4Runner. I had the ATF drained and filled by the dealer at 45000 miles. I would like to do it myself this time. I am wondering if I measure precisely what comes out; can I just put that amount back in and be done with it?

That’s interesting. I think this might be happening a lot. Can you let me know what they say and if they are going to do anything about it? I doubt damage was done but more information will be good to have.

I was watching this video and I thought Ill check my hose. I doubt its off but about 20000miles ago the dealer did do some warranty work. Low and behold it was OFF! I cant believe it. I reconnected obviously; I havent noticed any symptoms that he has described. The truck has 30000miles now...

I agree with you. I have not read about any other methods for doing this job either. If anyone has heard of this issue being fixed without the engine coming out please let me know; otherwise I will be asking them for the details on this method they plan to use.

Issue not solved (yet) So it turns out the issue is not solved. The oil kept coming back to the same spot I showed in the pictures and when I showed the mechanic myself he looked into it further. He removed the condenser and alternator to see it was in fact leaking from the timing chain cover...

The dealer ended up putting UV dye in the oil and after driving it for a couple days I brought it back. They found that the oil filter housing had a bolt that was almost a full turn loose. The master mechanic that was working on it said that oil would drip onto the belt and then get splashed...

It is going to the dealer today for diagnosis. I will keep you informed. Has anyone with a small timing cover leak tried switching to 5w30. I wonder if anything would change? I believe only North America uses 0w20 in this engine to due CAFE. Perhaps the thinner oil exacerbates this issue...

My 2021 has oil in the indicated spots in the pictures. There is only 3000miles on it. From the experiences you guys have had do you think this is signs of a timing cover leak? This area seems to drip down towards the lower control arm on the drivers side at the front of the engine.

I drove my 1st Gen Tundra to 400 000Kms with a drain and fill every 100 000km or 60 000miles. When I sold it the tranny was still very crisp and never faltered. As it got high with mileage I believe I started doing the drain and fill slightly more frequently to keep introducing fresh fluid...
