I had a very similar problem before on a old 89 Toy Pickup. A mechanic had put the transfer case in wrong and the 4wd shifter wouldn't even move. If that is the same problem your having that could be a answer for you. Also yes when the Runner is in 4wd it does have a indicator light that turns on.

I have been searching thru threads trying to find any info about roof racks. Is it possible to put a roof rack on a 91 Runner that does not have a factory one. If so what kind of modifications and I looking at doing and what precautions should I take before installing one.

I use a Alpine Type E10 with a bridged 300w MTX amp. It has plenty of bass, and I have had it for ten years and still haven't blown it.

I also have that same problem in my 91. I start her up let warm up then right at a mile from my house the light comes on. I know I have a timing problem from what my new mechanic/someone I trust with my baby had told me. But from what you described about your problem, mine does very similar...
