i experienced same problems AFTER replacing the head gasket because it was installed backwards. When the mechanic re-installed the head gasket correctly all issues disappeared. btw, i own a '95 4runner SR5 V6 2W AT 235K

big sub like a 10incher creates a lot of vibration. too maximize the performance i suggest to use a board as thick as possible to prevent exssessive flexing. 3/4" will work just fine. Well, if you're gonna go this far then you won't need to stick a wire up the passage. If the gaskets are backwards then the T-stat has been removed in order for the coolant to get around the engine. The engine would overheat immidiately with the T-stat in place.
