UPDATE: overdrive problem

Well, i took my truck to another mechanic who at first looked around the transmision area,not sure where exactly, and found that a wire that runs from transmision fluid thermostat to transmision computer was corroded, thus sending poor signal for computer to turn on torque converter.
Apparently, in order for overdrive to engage, not only the speed of travel but temparature of fluid matters too.
He replaced the wire cleaned up the area, but the solution lasted one evening.
After much scrutinizing he suggested to change the engine thermostat. When he removed the existing one it was no there, well, the sealing gasket part was there, but the mechanizm with the spring and all that was cut off.
He explained that without this the thermostat the coolent would immideatly go to the radiator, get cooled off, and overdrive would not engage because of low temperature.
I told him the the previous mechanic told me thathe had an overheating problem after replacing the head gasket, but somehow remedied this problem. this was the solution.
My second mechanic installed a new thermostat and, of course, the overheating problem came back. Also, the coolant was constantly dirty.
He removed the radiator and tried to flush out the dirt, but could not succeed so ended up replacing my radiator too. Ka-ching!
This improved but did not eliminate overheating. Although, my overdrive started to work fine!
After much investigating he finally found out the culprit of everything.
Drum roll.......
My previous mechanic INSTALLED THE HEAD GASKET BACKWARDS.
apparently, there's a right and a left side!
Because of that some holes for the coolant were blocked off, not cooling the engine and it would over heat. By cutting out the thermostat the fluid was able to go throught the radiator to get to other parts of the engine.

Before i posted my problem here i looked for an answer on another general automotive forum.
There i searched for posts about overdrive problems and found one post that a mechanic posted. He said he did many head gssket replacments and every once in a while would install one backwards and that in turn would creat problems like overheating and overdrive problems.
I took this information to my previous mechanic who told me that the head gaskets are made so that they install only one way. He told me he did it correctly.
BTW, can't get a hold of him now, his phone is disconnected too :(

I have a similar problem where my engine overcools.
1995 4wd 3.0 V6
Here it goes:
It takes several minutes (and several miles sometimes) to warm up to the point where the car will shift into overdrive. It always shifts into gear at exactly the same mark on the water temp gague (just under half).

It has shifted out of overdrive while I was driving it once. It kind of scared me as all of the sudden, the vehicle jerked and the RPMs went up to 4.5k... It was fairly cold conditions (snowing) and during a long downhill section.

My questions:
Do you think this could be a head gasket installation problem also? The HG was replaced by the previous owner's mechanic. Is there any way to test for this, short of replacing the HG? Thanks,

There is definitely a right and left head gasket and the only difference is a quarter size hole. If they are mixed up the truck will heat up for sure. One sure way to tell is; with the truck warmed up and idling at a stand still, race the engine up to 3-4k rpm's and see if the temp gauge slowly drops. If it does and climbs back up quickly when at an idle again, the head gaskets are on backwards. I have had to deal with this problem before.
 
The gasket has a marker!!!

The gasket has a marker that says LEFT on one corner of it.
I went by the mechanic's this morning where my truck is and he showed me on the engine. I was looking from the passenger side at the rear right corner of the block. Looking through hoses with a flashlight i could see, sticking out, a silver colored piece with blue line on it and letters LEFT stamped on it.
This LEFT marker has to be on the driver's side, front left corner of the block. When installed, actually, will not be seen.

When installing parts that have left and right it is always facing forward as if you're sitting in the vehicle.

I tried your advice. With the vehicle in park with an ambient air temp of 68deg. it took 7.5 minutes for the coolant temp to reach operating temperature.

I then raced the engine up to 3700 rpm and held it there for 1.5 minutes. The temp gague held steady and just barely went up ever so slightly (Still right at the half way mark). After letting off, the temp went back to just under halfway, but no big changes in temp.
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Well it sounds like they are installed properly. If they weren't the temp gauge would rise almost to the H mark and run there until the engine is raced up to force the coolant through the WP by pass to flow through the system. Another way to tell for sure would be to drain the cooling system, remove the T-stat and push a piece of wire up the passage behind the waterpump twords the left cyl head. if the wire stops at the head then the gaskets are backwards and the passage is blocked.

Do you think this could be causing the O/D problem?

Well, if you're gonna go this far then you won't need to stick a wire up the passage. If the gaskets are backwards then the T-stat has been removed in order for the coolant to get around the engine. The engine would overheat immidiately with the T-stat in place.
 
hate to resurrect such an old thread but this is the closest thread i've found to my problem. I have an 87 4runner with auto transmission. A while ago the tranny started acting up and sometimes would not shift past 2nd. now it is even worse and I cannot shift into third (at all). From 2nd gear, it sluggishly accelerates and then spikes straight to overdrive.

to make matters worse, the overdrive light does not seem to function. i though it was the bulb that burned out but I replaced it and it still does not light up making diagnostics difficult. before I throw money at new shift solenoids, was hoping i could get some help fixing the OD light. Any clues on what it may be? I checked the fuses and they're all good.
 
I would check the continuity of the wires leading to your OD light... as well as the ohms of the wires leading to you shift solenoids...
