Make my 4Runner keep up with my FJ

I would agree with what has been said about experience. As mentioned, without experience mods may not make a difference especially if you don't know what to do in certain situations. I have a completely stock, other than tires, 3rd gen that I have taken every where I've wanted to go in Northern...

Why did you buy your 4 Runner?

I bought mine for several reasons, the biggest being reliability and off road capability. I have a 99 that I've had since brand new with 186k on it and it has taken me anywhere and everywhere I have wanted to go. This was a big reason I bought a new '12. Plus I like the way they look.

Let's talk Toyota service department experiences

Regardless of them being independent business's with only a license to sell a brand, they represent that brand. They are the link between the customer and the manufacturer. Ultimately, if they want that responsibility they should man up and do things right. If not they need to open a used car...

    Tire protection package

When I bought my 12 4R in July they tried to sell me on a tire protection package. It was around $300 and they said it would cover any road hazard etc. I don't remember for how long, but it would cover any tire I put on the vehicle, not just the stock ones. Anyways, I turned it down because I...

    AFE CAI Question

I know there is on going debate, but how does CAI affect the 4R? Is it worth it? Will it improve anything or is it just for looks and make a good conversation piece?

    Remote start

I debated the aftermarket and OEM remote starts. I went ahead with the OEM so the dealer would install it. I talked them down to their cost which is only $250 and said I would pay cash for it when I picked up the vehicle, I didn't want it part of my financing. When I picked it up the remote...

Your Typical Newbie Questions, or may be NOT

For what its worth, I also have a 99 4R that does have the e-locker. Had it since brand new. In 14 years of owning it and doing some pretty heavy off-roading, I have only used the e-locker once to get out of a situation. And even then, there was another way out. The few other times I've used it...

Your Typical Newbie Questions, or may be NOT

OP, before you buy used, look at prices of new ones. Unless you are going to buy from a private party, it is not worth buying a used one from a dealer. When I first started looking for a 4R I looked at used ones. Found an SR5 I really liked. It was a 2010 with 36,000 miles on it. Had been...

    Gas mileage

I too though the gas mileage would be a little better on these 4runners. I have a 12 SR5 and avg. 16-17 with mixed driving. On that note, I didn't buy the 4runner for gas mileage, I bought it for a family vehicle and reliability. But, it makes me wonder when my 08 Mustang with a V8 consistently...

    2wd 5th gens?

Don't consider this a personal attack, cuz its just my personal opinion, but to me there is nothing more wasteful or useless than a lifted 2wd vehicle. I hate the sight of them!!!!

    Stock tires on snowpack.

I changed out my stock tires for some Cooper Discoverer AT3's. I am extremely satisfied with them. Just hit 5,000 with them and no problems. Was finally able to take it in the snow yesterday, deep snow and they performed better than I expected. They are one of the more popular choices for the...

    Good replacement for rear wiper?

Who uses rear wipers? I don't think I've ever turned mine on and I've owned my 99 since it was brand new!!

    poor fuel milage

My 99 went from about 16-17 city/highway to 12 last year and I don't have a clue why. I've had the same size/type tires on it for the past 8 years so I know that isn't why. I've replaced plugs, wires, fuel filter. I've cleaned the MAF and throttle body, and put seafoam in the gas tank. Still no...

    How to determine exhaust leak?

What is the best way to determine an exhaust leak? I think I can hear one but not sure. Is it best to take it into a mechanic or a muffler shop? If there is one, it is coming from closer to the engine, not the muffler or exhaust pipe underneath.
