Well, update. i reached up under the dash, behind the air ducting and wiggled around any wires i could feel. low and behold, it started working! so there must be something loose up under there. at least now i know where to be looking!

does anyone know or have any pictures of how the factory wiring harness is routed? just want to know where i need to start tearing things apart.

I just installed a new (used) engine in my 97 4runner. engine is running good but i'm getting 2 codes for knock sensor failure. since both are showing bad i'm assuming its the harness but if i'm tearing it all the way down i'm changing everything and rebuilding the injectors while i'm there...

FOUND IT plug under the dash was not all the way seated! do have a check engine light on though so i need to figure that out. Unfortuatly this enegine isnt ODB it has a the diaganostic port under the hood but it is just a bunch of terminals, not OBD. Thanks you everyone for all the help!

Update: was able to test voltage at the starter an i have 13 volts at the starter but nothing on the small wire when the key is turned. I ran a hot lead from the battery and jumped it to the spot the small wire plugs in and the starter spins. is there a neutral saftey switch if so any idea...

so on the starter there is a plug in connector and a larger one that is problbly bolted on. which ones do i need to check. its a bear to even reach those let alone get a meter up there.
