new engine installed.. how wont start..help

Just installed a new..used.. engine in my 4 runner, everything is in, all hooked up, fluids filled and turn the key and nothing. solenoid isnt even clicking. I have checked grounds and have checked plugs and everything looks right.. I did take all the plugs off the transmission before i realized i could un hook everything behind the glove box so i did have the trans plugs off and had to put them all back on. Im thinking maybe neutral safety switch or maybe the stater went bad. unless i hooked up something wrong.. any ideas. :wacko:

Can you get to the starter and check if you're getting power to both wires on it?

so on the starter there is a plug in connector and a larger one that is problbly bolted on. which ones do i need to check. its a bear to even reach those let alone get a meter up there.

I would check both of them you should have battery voltage in the large wire all the time and on the small one with the plug you should have battery voltage when you attemp to crank it.

Do accessories work with the key in that position? Can you turn on the radio, roll down windows, etc?

Update: was able to test voltage at the starter an i have 13 volts at the starter but nothing on the small wire when the key is turned. I ran a hot lead from the battery and jumped it to the spot the small wire plugs in and the starter spins. is there a neutral saftey switch if so any idea which plug that is on the transmission?

The starting circuit runs to the park/neutral switch, if that is not connected properly it will not start. Its the bigger plug on the side of the auto transmission

FOUND IT plug under the dash was not all the way seated! do have a check engine light on though so i need to figure that out. Unfortuatly this enegine isnt ODB it has a the diaganostic port under the hood but it is just a bunch of terminals, not OBD.

What motor did you install? I thought all cars 96+ had to be OBD2?

You should be able to find a guide somewhere online for whatever motor you installed to jump the OBD1 diagnostic port. Usually you bridge two of the connectors in the diagnostic port with a paper clip, and your check engine light will flash a certain number of times, which corresponds to an error.

Only cars to be sold in the US had to have it by the 97 model year. Good advice on jumping the connector for codes. I have an 88 Toyo van that works that way. Not as cool as using Torque but it is very effective.
