if neither the stalk nor the hazard button work i wouldn't think it would be the stalk. have you checked that all of the other non-related fuses / relays are totally inserted / working? try disconnecting the positive terminal for a few minutes and reconnecting and see if you get any difference

interesting I havent done anything with the thermostat, it was replaced last when the timing belt was done at 118k. you think it's worth delving into at this point? i have about a month to go before the high ambient temp maxes out at 55
