Curiosity got the better of me, so I went out to the garage and removed the 2 screws that hold the blade assembly in place. After seeing how it goes together, it looks like OEM is the only way to go because there's no hook. I highly recommend the Rain-X wipers for the front, though.

That's correct; mine is a '98 and has the tiny little "card holder" compartment up there. I didn't realize that not all 3rd-gens are like that.

Thanks for the welcome. The only mods I'm looking at right now are some lighting upgrades. Other than that, I'm just checking it over and getting it ready to be my daily driver for this Chicago winter.

I bought my 1998 4Runner exactly one week ago, and it feels like a brand new truck despite having 168K on it. It runs great, looks great, and nearly everything works. I look forward to learning more about it here. -Mike
