Have you used a Digital multi meter to check for voltage? Reading your description again, If it was driving , something maybe loose and probably a ground. A rusted nut or wire. You need the most draw at startup but once started it would run. Have you tried checking your grounds?

What did you sell it for? How long did it take to drop in the engine?

I think I still have an old toyota manual for my 86 which had the 22re if you need me to look up something. I did have this problem once and found the main fuse link melted completely. Ran a wire(fuselink) from the battery to the fuse box.....BAM worked. Took me a week to find it.
