Is there a way to modify the wiring of a 2001 tailgate to make it work on a 1998 4runner?

I have a 1997 4runner, 4WD, manual 5-speed transmission. My transfer case needs to be rebuilt/replaced. I found a low mileage transfer case from a 1998 4runner. My question is, would it be possible to swap out a transfer case from a 1998 4runner, 4WD, automatic transmission to mine? Because...
