Can An Auto Trans Transfer Case Swap with A 5-Speed Trans Transfer Case?

I have a 1997 4runner, 4WD, manual 5-speed transmission. My transfer case needs to be rebuilt/replaced. I found a low mileage transfer case from a 1998 4runner.

My question is, would it be possible to swap out a transfer case from a 1998 4runner, 4WD, automatic transmission to mine?

Because the donor is from an automatic transmission, the transfer case shifter is positioned on the left side of the automatic transmission shifter/selector (see attached picture). Mine is positioned on the right side of the stick shifter (see attached picture).

Are both transfer cases essentially the same where all that needs to be done is to just swap the transfer case shift lever assemblies so that (for my purpose) the transfer case shift lever is now positioned to the right?

All j-shift are the same case so yes all you need to do is swap the shift lever. Good time to replace the shift lever bushings while you are in there. The multi mode cases are different so make sure it is not from a limited

I can't remember if the 3rd gens had any forward shift cases. Make sure the shift lever comes out of the case in the same place as yours and it will be compatible (again, no motor on the back, of course).

Other than that, it is just the lever that you have to swap out. Expect the seat to be gone. You can get a non-rubber replacement from Marlin Crawler. If you have an MT, you might already be familiar...

Should work. make sure the t case you are buying wasnt abused if you can

Like others have said all j-shift transfer cases will interchange but the shift lever is different. Automatic transmission j-shift transfer cases have an additional sensor/switch compared to the manual transmission j shift transfer cases. Compare the two and swap the sensor for the plug and gasket before installation.
