I would also stick with some of the higher quality tools like those brands that have been mentioned(Snap-on, Craftsman, Husky, Klein etc) as they pay off in the long run. I've actually had a couple of cheaper quality hand tools ( 2 crescent wrenches and a socket extension) break on me recently...

I use the steel blank idea for when I go running. I put the steel key into a shoe pocket and I hide the key with the chip somewhere inside the car, and I use the steel blank just to open the door. Its worked well so far.
