Odd tire wear

So I started feeling a pretty noticeable vibration on the way home from work the other day, and I started looking around and did not notice anything at first. Then the next morning I came out and saw a flat right rear tire, went to get the compressor and started to air it up when I found this. Man am I glad I made it home and the tire did not give out on the freeway. Tires had about 40k miles on them. What could have caused this ?

Tires don't wear like that :nono: It's been dragged :boink: Usually happens when the E-brake is left on. How many beers did you have after work?

I'm not a mechanic but if you google "tire wear pattern" you'll see that your tire has been underinflated for a long time. And the bald area probably lead to the ripe. I have also seen this wear on front tires for those who corner aggressively.

Slow down on corners and/or check proper PSI

From the tread pattern on the rest of the tire it does look like you were underinflated, but that didn't cause the one bald patch or the rip - that got dragged. A lot. Were you towed recently, or did you lock up the brakes real good at any point?

Now that you mentioned it, it does look like he may have smoked the tire in hard braking. Just curious...would ABS prevent something like?

I, imho, don't think any braking issues caused this type of tire failure. I would suggest that an inner belt broke, causing the tread to bulge out and wear unevenly. It is possible that the tire hit a bad pothole or curb, which could have led to the belt failure. Hard braking, would usually cause a flat spot all the way across the tire tread, not just on one side. Also, with modern ABS systems, it is almost impossible to lock the wheels and skid them for long enough to cause serious tire wear. And, as most should know, the parking brake system on the 4runner is marginal at best, I doubt it could cause a wheel to drag and flat spot.
