Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to go with the 31's. The friend I bought the runner from said he had 31's on it and that it did perform better with the smaller tires. He ended up not liking the 33's either.

If I could do it for $50 I would. It is pretty difficult to locate 4Runners around here that have any parts left worth using. I was under the impression that if I re-geared that I would need to replace the gears in both the front and rear.

The reason that I disconnect the pos battery terminal is so that I can keep the key in the ON position (so the steering whell doesn't lock while I'm towing it) without running the battery down. I have a towing light set for the 4 Runner that has all lights so it is just like towing a trailer.
