Hey guys,
just picked up a beater to start sharing the workload from my aging sports car.
It's a 1991 4rd "loaded" 4x4 auto. Its got a rebuilt head and new cooling system because it over heated last winter. New tires. Mechanic owned. A little rust on the rear quarters has started to develop. For the year and millage though it seems to be in great shape.
Any advice on the rust? just leave it alone? treat it with anything? spray paint? what?
Also, I have heard urban legends about changing fluid in automatic transmission. basically i've been told by many people that changing the fluid in older auto's will make them not shift as smoothly because the tranny gets "worn in" and "used to" the old fluid. Is there any support for this? and is changing the tranny fluid in my well worn in truck a good idea?
Planning on changing the diff fluids, tranny, engine oil, and flushing radiator next week weekend. This includes adding "waterwetter" to the radiator since overheating seems to be an issue with these. Good idea? Also, is it common to put lower temperature thermostat in these things? if so what temperature?
Also- what should i know about owning a 4runner of this age and millage? what should i check for/look for to ensure a happy relationship?
