The last ban only applied to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban, so if any renewal of the same ban goes into effect, I think there will still be plenty of such weapons available.
I think it's ironic that Romney actually supported a ban in a state like Massachusetts - with a huge liberal/democrat population - but now apparently is against it. Politics 101: pander to the special interests.
As far as anyone "coming for" weapons, I don't ever see that happening in this country. Not only would it be hugely-unpopular, but the government simply doesn't have the resources (not to mention the desire) to do it.

uummm..barring the whole 21 round mag thing does anyone of you guys actually own an automatic assault rifle? i don't and probably never will, i think the current laws are just fine...i think the term assault rifle is defined by idiots, in my mind it's as simple as rate of fire, semi auto vs auto, who cares how the gun is shaped or how it looks and that somehow putting an extra 5 rounds in the clip makes it an full fledged assault rifle...that is ridiculous, i can kill just as many just as quick with a semi-auto 20 clip hunting rifle vs a 25 round semi-auto ak, probably even more just due to accuracy....it makes no sense to me besides just styling...can you guys help me understand this crap, and why people seem to think we need tougher laws then what we already have? i feel like i'm missing something here.....

Yeah, it IS pretty stupid. I've run across people with permits who had full-auto weapons and most complained about using up too much ammo, anyway. I wouldn't want one, personally. Semi-auto is fine and I have a couple, but I actually prefer my Marlin lever gun in 35 Rem. over all of 'em. Bolt action? Can't go wrong with that, either. And as soon as I find the right one, I plan to pick up a K98 Mauser.
There's a reason the military added the three-round burst to the M-16/AR platform after Vietnam; first round may be on target, the rest are usually wasted. I think automatic weapons are only utilized effectively when crew-served or mounted. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I think the whole assault rifle ban was born out of complete ignorance about guns. AKs and ARs just got singled out because they are popular. I imagine it starting as, one day some political suit asked, "What do you call those kind of guns like AK47s and M16s?.. Oh, they're called assault rifles? Well, we should ban those, they're terrible". Cuz yeah, as the law was, a pistol grip makes all the difference in the world whether the gun is too dangerous for the public. Just plain retorded.
The assault rifle ban is still in effect in my state though. No AR15s, but you can have a Mini 14 (which I'm sure you know, shoots the same .223 rounds). But because the Mini has a normal rifle stock, it's legal. That's the only thing that differs from an AR15 in terms of the speed and quickness to reload. So, if you sawed the pistol grip off an AR15, it would technically be legal in CA. WTF? Like you said, it should be all about auto and semi auto, not ergonomics of the way the gun feels in your hands. In the end, I think it's just something for politicians to debate.
Not to mention, I personally think it's stupid that this ban is even an issue again in the presidential debates. IIRC, The first federal ban during the Clinton admin was a 10 (I think) year "trial" law to see if the stats showed a decrease in gun related crimes, particularly murders. At the end of the 10 years, it could be set in stone or withdrawn, which Bush withdrew it (probably the only thing good he did during his 8 years, lol). The funny part is, the reports I have read and the stats I've seen all said that the ban had no noticeable affect on gun related crime on the nation as a whole during those years. And from what I've read, gun related crime has actually gone down nationwide since the ban was lifted!
I just see it as, if someone drives their car through a donut shop and kills a baker's dozen of people, they don't try to ban driving. I think it's a presidential issue because of the Batman shooting, but it's essentially the same thing as the donut shop.

I think this is utterly false. As soon as you get to the part where they talk about an infringement of "our 2nd Amendment rights," you can tell it's one of those NRA scare-tactics that the group is so fond of. The rest of the article speaks to that.
And it's supposed to be from Reuters? I can't remember the last time a legitimate news wire published an article that ended with "please-forward-this-message-to-everyone-you-know..."
All this will do is boost ammo and weapons sales to people who don't know any better. And who usually can't afford to be spending money on that stuff, anyway. We have smart individuals in America, but we're a country of largely-ignorant people, unfortunately.

Well I decided on a rifle, savage 10fp-sr.
Hopefully will have it by February. Until then my long range shooting will be done with my mosin nagant lol.
Reason I'm waiting to by the rifle is because I'm getting a crossbow for deer hunting here in the next month or so.

The Savage is a great rifle. I have had both the Remington and the Savage, and I really like them both, and I shot them both really well. For the long range stuff, like said above, optics are the key. Good bases and rings for sure with the scope. I bought a lot of stuff from SWFA.com for my rifles, have a pretty good selection and good prices.

I am big guy but dang them 12ga suck to shot. I have an 870 as well but I don't shot it as a slug gun. I just think it is to much recall to take a long shot with.

lol, yeah personally my shoulder defiantly feels it after a few boxes of slugs through the 870....i personally like to drop a slug in the tube in the middle of some birdshot just to screw with my buddies sometimes, haha.....:beer:
