Also, anyone with suggestions on available AR uppers in the $300 neighborhood? The ones I have on order are A3 middie flat-tops with 16" 1:9 twist chrome lined barrels.

I'm also looking for complete BCGs in the $150 range.

West coast armory here in wa is selling parallax tactical bcg's for $149.99 as a special promotion that ends this sat. You'll have to call as they took down their online store when the panic started. Parallax is fairly new to the bcg game so there isn't too much press either way. It'll be awhile before you find the well know manufacturers at that price. Ahhh, the days when I was able to pick up a bcm and dd bcg for $149 at my LGS.

Can't help you with the $300 upper. Best I've seen are the psa uppers for $399 with fsb and 1:7 twist.

I would check gunbroker.com. I just picked up a Full-Auto bolt carrier (no bolt) for $119 and they had complete BCGs for $180. I'm converting mine to FA bolt carriers hence why I dont need bolts. The FA carriers are a little heavier than the semis and are more reliable and from what I'm told (by my class III smiths) the FA carriers are easier on the gun. Even though I'll never shoot enough to wear one out. BTW completely legal to own a FA BCG, in fact many manufacturers sell their rifle with them installed.
As far as twist goes, supposedly the 1:7 wth stabilize the heavier bullets better.

TBH I'm not sure of the brand, I just pulled it out and it had a "jc" stamped on the side. My smith pointed it out to me and says they are good bolts and there are really only a couple bcg manufacturers. The M16 was originally designed as a FA rifle and the semi-auto bcg is cut differently and is much lighter, there for it moves too fast sometimes and thats where many malfunctions come from. Colt, DD and a few others equip their ARs with FA bcg for that very reason, or so I'm told.

I've only had one failure and that was a FTF so that could have been a speedy bolt, either way I'm not too worried.

I really only mentioned the twist because I keep 77gr Hornady loaded in mine for HD and Hog hunting, otherwise the 1:9 will shoot the 45-62gr just fine. Hell my brother in-law built a 24" AR15 with a 1:14 twist specifically for coyote and hog hunting using 55gr. The barrel is long enough that the slow twist works out a little better.

My CMP gun was service grade, but that was a good 10+ years ago.

Yes, Garands are made for military M2 ball ammo. Off the shelf .30-06 is typically loaded too hot for Garands. Your best bet is to find surplus ammo. CMP is selling some surplus Greek ammo for Garands: Sales - Ammunition

There is some new ammo specifically designed for Garands:

I don't have experience with that gun, but in general, Century sucks. Horrid quality control.

I thought you'd like that.

Both were built to the same standards and carefully inspected by the Army. So in terms of quality I'm sure both are the same. HRA rifles were produced after WWII, for the Korean war, so they might be in better condition.

There were a lot fewer HRA rifles build than Springfield, so perhaps they have a slightly greater collector value, but I'm not an avid collector, so I don't know for sure.

Just wanted to share my new found excitement..

My town just got a new Gander Mountain "official firearm super store" and it had it's grand openning a few weekends ago. I walked in and dear god it was heaven on earth. This place is the size of an average Best Buy and all 4 walls are lined with rifles, shotguns, pistols, and guns of all kinds. There was about a 500 square foot section of just ammo all at the prices ammo used to be 8 months ago! Targets everywhere from tree style dualing targets to game targets to any paper or clay targets out there. unlimited gun accessories. It was amazing! I had to leave my wallet in the car or I probably would have depleted my life savings lol.

They didn't seem to be over priced in my opinion. Saw an Ak-47 7.62 cal for 899, 250 rounds of s&w .40 cal 180 grain FMJ's for 109.00 and there basic model AR's were between 800 and 1100 pending brand. With that said though I've only been watching the firearms market in the past year, so I can imagine those prices are high compared to a few years ago.

Those prices aren't terrible, esp the ammo. I'll have to check out one of the firearm super stores if I come across one. The last items I shopped for were around 15-20% more than competitors, but it was a regular GM. Their FFL fee was $75 I think, last I checked. I did buy a Taurus from them years ago and have to say the purchase was a fairly smooth transaction. At least that one wasn't marked up too bad at the time.
