I think the article oversold the iPhone images. The portrait mode was ok, but clearly had a fake look to it.

Besides, no matter how much better phone cameras become, when you need more than one camera (either for back for backup or for shooting from multiple angles), you don't want to buy another phone. So there will always be a need for dedicated cameras.

Agreed. I think the cameras on phones are amazing, especially considering the size, but their flaws magnify the larger the picture gets. Also, they do perform well when you have ideal light, but that's another big gap with a proper sensor. The ability to draw in more detail in low-light situations.

Where I do see camera tech going with digital is on multi-lens cameras.

I have not been around for quite a while. Here are just a few from this year. Will probably be posting more in the future. In other news, I have FINALLY upgraded from my 70-300 f4.5-5.6!!! Last week got myself a 70-200 f4! Still small enough and light enough for hiking but so so so much better in every way.

Finally got some real fall photos this year. I have always been to early or too late. Fall here happens randomly per the individual tree. There will be a fully green tree next to one without hardly any leaves... It has been quite annoying to shoot over the past years. (Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6; D7100; 155mm, 1/200, ISO 500, F4.5)

Panorama of the Northern Lights on the horizon with the Milkyway above. This is a 30min drive out of town so it is pretty alright. (Tokina 11-16 f2.8; D7100; 11mm, 25sec x many photos, ISO6400, f2.8)

Finally one of many images this year that I have really enjoyed. From a backpacking trip into some mountains a couple of ranges over. This is sunrise and handheld because I am not smart about bring my tripod from my tent to the spot........ But I was thankfully able to pull it off. (Tokina 11-16 f2.8; Nikon D7100; 16mm, 1/200, ISO 100, f5)

Here are the results of my most recent attempts at photographing the night sky. I'm getting better results now but still not quite what I want. I'm trying to get the Milky Way but so far all I get is just a lot of stars:

1st photo using lightroom and a dslr

any and all advice is welcome and appreciated... really lookin forward to adding the 5th gen to these. looking to do astro photog and landscape mostly.

the colors are good. looks like a great sunset. I do see a lot of pixels. could be dirt on your lens. you can use spot removal tool in LR to remove these. easier to always make sure you clean your lens before starting to shoot.

it does appear to be out of focus too. focusing in the dark is difficult, may need to switch to manual focus. the bushes I could fault to if you did a long exposure and it was windy. the water tower though in background is a little blurry.

composition. there is a lot of dark space at the bottom. I would re-compose the image, or crop it to remove the extra dark space.

its digital. memory is cheap. keep shooting! take 100 pics a week to learn.

Knocked the AF out of whack on my 5d in January, and nobody will touch it.....So I bought a 6d. Not sold on it yet, but it's 'ok.' Has way too many buttons [crap].

i had every intentions of doing a long set of star trails for this shot but i got interrupted. i was in a random parking lot middle of no where near the airport.
12 mins in to the trails another car pulled in. no idea why but they sat there for 15mins (i had already packed up) and then left.
this was at 830pm with no moon, Denver international airport is about 10 miles behind
