This is the most significant redesign since 1979 IMO, and for one reason: They've dropped the solid front axle in favor of IFS. With that said, it still retains the front locker. I guess the size and chassis layout makes it an option for dissatisfied(and very affluent) 5th gen Limited owners that don't want the extra size of a Land Cruiser.

Have friend that is on his second one. He laughs about everytime it gets within a couple blocks of a Mercedes dealer, it just takes overs like a homesick angle, and heads in for a $10 thousand dollar adjustment. The first one (he put 140k on the clock) was almost 10 grand a year in warrantee work per year! But they are really neat, other than that. We took it to Moab a few times. Towed our dirt bike over there with it. We have had it on some of the trails. It did better than expected. Not enough suspension travel, but the lockers helped overcome that. Made it to the top of Poison Spider Mesa, and did all of Hells Revenge on one trip. It made it up Tip Over Challenge as well.
Did Fins and Things also.
But what I want to know is.........How well does the new IFS flex? Have they lost suspension travel,(like every other IFS). Or did their engineers solve that problem. I'm not a fan of IFS. Sure it tracks better, wears tires better, has lots of moving parts to break. But for most people in this country, its better.
Unless your doing some fairly serious rock crawling, IFS will probably be sufficient.

Man, I love the G Wagons. But not the biggest fan of this redesign. Fading into more of a Jeep look.

I think the front end looks like another facelift, but otherwise pretty damn similar to every past variant. The IFS is definitely the way to go for its buyer base. Hell, if I had one the IFS would be better for my needs even if I wheeled it, but it's more the novelty of having a modern Mercedes with suspension from the 70's. The strength is a bonus.

One thing that stood out to me................Break over angles improved! Somebody actually listened! What? A mfg listening to what works, amazing.
I wish Toyota/Lexus would spend a week on the trail at Easter jeep Safari. Ask the users what works and doesn't. Then apply some street sense and produce it. Instead of "We know what people SHOULD want, and that's what we are going to produce!" The aftermarket industry loves that approach. Things like approach angles, suspension travel, selectable lockers.
All things that are pretty well known, and easily incorporated at the mfg level. Should be standard equipment. Just naturally there, almost like windshield wipers, or tires.

Oddly enough there's something about the body that makes me feel the way I do. Can't really put my finger on it. Maybe the window design?

If money were no object, my winter 'dd' would be a G63, no doubt.

The 'trail rated' badge is dumb. It looks more like a lego car than it did before. I like the interior update the most.

Props for actually wheeling it. I'm really considering an early G500. Simpler the better. I just want to be the only guy on the trail with a Benz.

I personally find the AMG versions silly af. Just straight line speed. Can't corner or brake. I'd put my money into the other AMG cars for offer.

It's cool I can't lie. I have a friend with the 4x4 squared and it really turns heads when you drive it in Manhattan(easy way to get numbers), but the portal axles just screw up the articulation and I find that rear bumper pitiful.
