Adding another gun to my small collection: P290

Hey all,

I have been waiting for a quality subcompact to come out. I had a disasterous ownership experience with my Kahr PM9, which led me to my current Sig P239. However, for years, i have been wanting something smaller to carry...so that i don't have to modify my wardrobe too much. With P239, i have had to get slightly bigger jeans (waist) and wear loose T-shirts/golf shirts.

After researching for a long time, i have come to this new Sig...Sig P290. I want two-tone this time...just to change things up. I am undecided about laser, but my local store only has ONE...and it comes with laser...so, i may not have a choice.

Here is a internet pic of it:

Specs: P290 Two-Tone Laser

And from reviews so far, it is flawless...no one has had a jammed. I like the DAO trigger. I like to stick to 9mm (for cheapness and borderline effectiveness power). I hate safety (such as in 1911 design)...thus, no Kimber Solo. Sig will come out with 8+1 magazine (with pinky support) soon.

What do you guys think??

I like it. Been looking for a sub to carry also. I have a Glock27, it's okay. Please post up about the Sig if you wind up with it. Curious to hear how you like it.

I totally dig it, im 18 but I have my Ccw I carry ruger p95, its a bigger gun ( size, it's still a 9mm) but I'm a pretty big guy

Love my Ruger LCP.

LCP is very nice...but the caliber is a bit soft for me. In addition, my wife (love her to death!) bought literally thousands of 9mm rounds for me last year. She went to different Walmart to buy them...and stock them for my surprise Christmas gift!! So, i have unlimited practice ammo for a very long time! :)

LC9 is an alternative and my brother got one recently. He shot about 200 rounds and it jammed once. He is still in the "break-in" period...so, the jam is not disasterous. However, what bothered him was the long trigger pull...he is used to a Glock trigger. The Sig P290 has a shorter, but slightly heavier (i think) trigger...overall, the Sig trigger felt better in my hands. The Sig P290 felt also heavier duty (if that makes any sense) and better made than my brother's LC9...and given its cost, it should be! Geez, this Sig is expensive!

Good news for me!!! My local dealer won't come down on price...the gun pictured above would cost me $760 out the door. Too much money IMO. So, i kept calling everyone.

Amazingly, one Gander Mountain store had at least 3-4 of them! But, they are the "First Edition" models:

According to Sig: "The First Edition version is in limited quantities. The First Edition features aluminum grip plates with a P290 First Edition logo cast onto the grip plate. Only 2000 of these are being made."

Because they had so many, they put them on sale 3 weeks ago for $599. They are now listed for $699. (First Edition does not come with Laser.) So, i called them again today...and spoke to store manager this time...he agreed to sell it to me for $599!!! :gun6: Woohoo!! I will pick it up this week when i have the time.

Congrats man.

What do you think about the size of it though. I've seen a few reviews that say it's too wide and too heavy. Isn't it like 20 oz.?

How do you feel about 6+1?

4RunninRoman- How do you have CCW at 18? I thought you had to be 21 to buy a handgun.

It is 0.9" thick which is about the same as my old unreliable Kahr PM9. It is tiny tiny bit thinner than Kimber Solo. As for weight, i am OK...my current CC is 26 or so oz...so, i am used to the weight.

6+1 is OK...but Sig is coming out with 8+1 with pinky support very soon. So, this "problem" will be solved very soon. (I have 8+1 with my current P239.) Frankly, i care more about pinky support than the actual amount of rounds because if you had to fire more than 3-4 rounds, then you're already dead. :wow:

Update: well, my P290 is back to Sig for warranty work! :( The first 50 rounds went perfectly. Then after that, my gun misfired...in fact, the hammer did not go down! The gunsmith has never seen anything like this before from a Sig! I just don't have good luck with these subcompacts....

Sorry to hear about the warranty work!

Guns are like our trucks, things break sometimes.

And In the laws it states you have to be 21 to buy a handgun from a registered dealer, not from an individual, you only need to be 18.

As for my Ccw I got it through Maine, you only need to be 18 to get one, and Missouri honors all other states ccw's.

Loop holes in the system is all.

psh, come to az. you dont even need a ccw anymore. anyone can carry concealed. just not into a gov building or anywhere that serves alcohol.

but you do have to be 21 to purchase a hand gun. but 90% of the guns out here are street sales and have the serials scratched off anyway. i am currently waiting til i have enough dough to purchase a .40. still havnt decided which one yet though.

and of course, i would buy the proper way, and register it.

Just got an update from Sig...the defective part is something that was out of spec on the early batches. The part is a "trigger bar." Anyway, they know the problem and the fix is apparently definitive. The bad part is unfortunately on backorder...so, it will take another 2-3 weeks. :(

BTW, Sig customer service is not very pleasant to deal with...when i call up to ask for status, they act like they are doing me a favor and that i am wasting their time!! I had to remind them that i had paid a good deal of money for a gun that lasted one day in my hands before failing miserably. WTF?! Seriously, this experience may end my Sig fanboyism....

Should of got the Ruger LCP lol jk :)

The good news for me is that Sig has shipped my gun back...should be here Monday. Then Friday, i can test it. In addition, my 8-round magazines have arrived from Sig...it comes with the pinky support. I still have faith in Sig P290...from hearing other owners, the "fix" for what happened to me is definitive and the gun has no other flaws/defects. I will find out soon enough.

Here is a very detailed review of the P290: SIG Sauer P290 Review | GunGunsGuns.net

This author is well-known and he rated the P290 very high. :bigok: I can't wait to get mine back...it will be like Christmas all over again!! :D
