3rd Gen 4Runner Lift Information and FAQ's

Need some help determining if I should install 891 or 861 OME rear coils.

I carry a full size spare and tools in the cargo area as well as a roof top tent that stays on majority of the time.
Currently I have 890 coils installed and they are sagging under this current load as well as have lean on the drivers side.

I am a fan of the rake look but am curious what your opinions would be on which route I should go.
I've read that the 890 and 891 coils are the same height but the latter has more load carrying ability.

Any advise or pictures are appreciated of your setup
 
Seems this thread is alive and kicking so would like y'all's guidance:

2002 4runner 4WD, suspension is all original and ready for replacement. 9K smittybilt winch on a hidden mount in front (stock bumper); wood (2x6) sleeping platform in the back. Tires one size up from stock. Looking to lift no more than 2" to avoid UCA/geometry issues and hopefully fit in my garage.

Stuck trying to determine if I have enough weight to go 5100/881/890, or if I should stay with 5100/880/906. I don't want it to ride terribly on the road.

I'm also open to going 6112/5100 or even 6112/5160 if someone tells me it will be life changing day-to-day. The 4runner is no longer my daily so willing to put a few more $$ in.

About $500. This supposedly gives 2" lift but on the tall 1999 toyota 4runners maybe that only plays out to a 1" lift but i am not sure.

What are your measurements from fender to center of wheel? With the trim pieces removed from the fenders. I will take some measurements and edit this comment later. I think i measured 2.5" difference front to back. Almost a 3" sag

Also i did not pull the trigger on those parts above because i keep my 4runner loaded with heavy tools, tool boxes full of hammers and heavy wrenches, small power equipment, and pull trailers a lot. So i was wondering if i can go with a more heavy duty setup. I saw some but they were 3" lift which might cause problems. Is there a 2" lift heavy duty combination option of springs and shocks? Or else i have to do more research (read through this thread) and see what other problems might be caused by going all the way with a 3" heavy duty lift (other parts to replace, adjust, or extra wear on other parts).

Update June 2025: I ordered the OME 2891 coils for my rear. I was tempted by package deals at Toytec website but went with the cheap relatively proven option. I've heard complaints about 891 coils sagging and not holding up over time. But those were overwhelmed with mostly positive reviews. Next i will gauge whether or not to purchase new set of shocks for the rear. I think i do want to do the shocks too while i'm down there. But maybe new coils with the old shocks will solve my problem good enough?

Keep the stock front springs and lift it with the 5100 perches. 906s or 890s will probably both work for you in the rear.

I hear mixed feelings on using the stock front springs, will preloading them ride poorly?

I’m not opposed to replacing them, and would buy them pre assembled anyway to save that step.
 
After years, it is my time to ask some advice...

Have a 98 Limited on Bilstein 5100 setup in all 4 corners with OME 906 springs in the rear. 2.5" lift. I'd like to return it to stock height or within 1". I can adjust the 5100s in the front to stock height, but what would be a solid rear suspension setup that is soft, handles washboards, and not bouncing all over the place? Not concerned about weight in the rear.

Should I be going with OEM 99 coils? What shock is best for the rear for weekend warrior dirt?

OEM coils should work for you. You may get some bouncing, etc. if your old 5100's are wearing out, but they are a good choice.

#1 for comfort off road (assuming 'working' suspension) is airing down...

Keep in mind that you will be hitting the bump stops more often if you drop the ride height, which may or may not be fine for you, depending on what you are doing.

Thanks Charlie. No idea on the age of these 5100s, I guess I'll find out pretty quickly. Truck has 333k miles on it, the 5100s look like they've been on there a few years. Perhaps I'll do coils now, and update. OEM coils sound good, likely go with the 99 "talls".

Had another thought here - worn bushings will also make the ride much harsher. When I replaced the rear bushings with poly (stiffer than stock!), it got MORE comfortable - not less.

Hi everyone, ok I ordered an ARB bullbar which supposedly weighs around 200 pounds. So that minus the stock front bumper will be my new front weight addition. No winch yet. I'm wondering what spring to get. Currently its all stock in the front but I have some 4runner B8 5100's, 24-248730 with 4 perches. Should I get some 881's? Or is the stock spring Ok to pair with the 5100's? I want maximum 1" lift, just stiffer to handle off road driving with the new weight. I don't want any problems with LBJ's. I run 32" tires with no plan to go larger.

In the back I have 906's with 5100's which is stiffer but better suited to all the weight in the back. It gives about 1" of lift which I want to match in the front.

I just completed a suspension lift at home. Installed are King coilovers (non-reservoir type) and SPC upper control arms currently set to D. I have approximately 23.5 inches from center of hub to bottom of flare ('02 limited model). Question - does anyone know of a really good alignment shop here in Oregon? I'm new to the area and need to fix my wandering at highway speeds.

I've decided to go with SRQ's pre-assembled bilsteens, but I cant decide on either 1.5inch or 2.5inch springs for the lift.
My upper ball joints are in bad condition, so I'll grab JBA UCAs.

I've never lifted a vehicle before, only lowered. If I go with a 2.5inch lift, would that be fine on the 2wd and anything else I should look at upgrading/replacing too?

Unless you want that front REALLY high, go with the lower lift option. The 2WD will be 0.5-1.0" higher than a 4WD with the same suspension setup. Too high means difficult alignments and bad handling.
