Thoughts on how long the 4 banger + turbo will last?

I think once they get the kinks worked out in a few years longevity should be good. Old Subaru’s in the 90’s had turbo 4’s and lasted forever. Personally I do not like having smaller engines that need turbos to produce power. I would rather have naturally aspirated engines but Toyota cannot seem to get the fuel mileage up on them so they go t small turbo engines.
 
Base engine probably go 200K with good mainteneance, but the turbo may not make it that far unless it is treated kindly.
 
I don't see why the engine won't make it to 200K+ under proper usage and maintenance.

The main problem will come from owners (excluding people participating in forums like this) who will not do proper maintenance or will engage in improper application such as excessive towing/snowplow/hauling.

So, the engine, on average, will ultimately get a reputation for unreliability when compared to past Toyota products, even though the shortened lifespan will be largely caused by neglect and/or abuse.

IMHO

People won't use this engine any different than engines of the past, so that's the kinds of use it has to endure, will it survive is the question.

I agree with you that they will...and that will be the problem. People will do the same maintenance schedule on the turbo that they were used to with the 1GR and the turbo will fail prematurely.

That's not the fault of the engine, that's the fault of the owner. Since folks are not known for looking in the mirror when stuff goes south, they'll assign blame elsewhere.

With that said, even perfect maintenance on the new engine will probably not produce the same legendary reliability of the 1GR. That ship has sailed.
 
If it's any consolation, here every van is a turbodiesel of some sort. Historically diesels required more frequent servicing than petrol engines, they don't now but really I think that is just to appease fleet managers (who cares what happens once it's out of warranty?)

Anyway these will frequently go ridiculous mileages without a service (Saw it myself on the little Transit Connect vans the company I did an apprenticeship with years ago) and just keep on going.

I wouldn't be worried about Toyota being able to nail together a decent turbo engine, but I also understand why people would want to keep things basic.

I don't think people would be worried if it was a turbo diesel since most diesel applications are very robust. Unfortunately, diesel cars have virtually disappeared in the US and we only get turbocharged engines that run on regular gasoline.

Heh. It's funny. For me the opposite is true, I would prefer the gasoline engine.

Modern diesels here are SOOOO complicated (See: expensive to fix) due to emissions regulations. Gasoline is an inherently cleaner fuel too, which gives the oil an easier time. Modern turbo diesels also generate so much torque that it becomes harder to design resilient drivetrains for them while still being cost-competitive. With a turbo gasoline engine at least that torque is spread out over a broader rev range, especially with a higher revving 4 cylinder.

Trust me, you aren't missing anything not having diesels over there now. The real sweet spot was the early 2000s era VAG group and PSA (Peugeot Citroen) engines. 500,000 miles from a 2.0 litre was achievable (With proper care and servicing)

You know, we might actually be mostly in agreement. I also greatly prefer gasoline to diesel. However, I also greatly prefer NA to turbocharged. My comment was specifically talking about when a turbo is introduced into the equation.

In my mind, anything for daily use by a normal person is best kept simple. Turbos have their places - race tracks, and vehicles driven by professionals. (E.g. trucks where turbos do actually improve economy as well as performance, but are doing the sort of work that diesels love and are professionally maintained on time and on spec)

I said trucks, I think you guys call them semis, we say lorry and sometimes truck. But I didn't mean pickup trucks in general.

Funnily enough I would drive some big old NA V8 quite happily if fuel wasn't $8.70 a gallon equivalent....

Yeah...at least for me, whenever I hear truck I think of a light duty or heavy duty pickup...not some kind of HGV.
