Burned tranny oil from Grease Monkey...Total rebuild

So, Ive been dealing with this issue:

I had Grease Monkey change tranny oil. I checked it 1000 miles later due to not being able to shift into 4th gear. The oil level was 2qrt low. 98 runner takes 2.3 total. Now it's at tranny shop. They told me the oil was "black" and burnt, and a total rebuild was in order.

I've taken action and a representative from Grease Monkey is going to tranny shop to inspect parts and take pictures. He has 2o years experience in transmissions. I hope they are found liable for the $1800 repair.

Q: Is they a indicator light for high transmission temp?
Q: Does my tranny have a cooler?
Q: Would no oil destroy all parts of the transmission?
Q: Is it possible to burn off 2 qrts in 1000miles of gear oil?

Anyone have this type of issue in past? I just bought this truck a month ago. The repair cost w/ clutch replacement is half of what i paid for the truck.

Thoughts, suggestions would be great.

So you are talking about a manual transmission? If so the gear lube is pretty dark to begin with, I doubt there is a gear oil cooler, and the problem sounds more like a worn shifting fork or sloppy linkage or the plastic linkage ball holder.

need more info, regarding questions...

My first thoughts:
No oil=damage to all moving parts.
First signs of damage=4th-5th syncro damage.
Whould shift into 1-2-3 and 5, BUT 4th would grind but engage at 2500rpm.

Brought 4R to transmission specialist.

Anyone have further thoughts on my questions...

You would think that with no oil the trans would have been making quite a bit more noise. Yes I see your point about damage to all moving parts but it was shifting smoothly into all gears except 4th. Burned gear lube ends up being like tar and will stick things that need to move. It sounds like you would rather they give you a brand new transmission. Weren't there puddles under the trans I mean it sounds like you are saying you had no warning about this.

Yeah, you would think with no oil the transmission would be making alot of noise BUT it didn't. I dont know how long i was driving with the oil so low. What I do know is 'the monkey" changed my transmission oil about 1000 miles ago. Did "the monkey" forget to put oil in? Is it possible to burn off 2 qts of oil? Is there something else going on with transmission system?

I just want "the monkey" to pay for damages. It would seem as if they are the liable and at fault here...would you agree?

Provide me with answers to this questions: With no leak how is it possible to be 2 qrts low on oil?

I agree no leak should be full and there is no way you burned this gear oil up.

Okay,

here is the latest update regarding my research into my situation:

1. Transmission oil Full
2. No Leak
3. Check level 3 days later (2qrts low)

= Gear oil is leaking into Transfer Case. Check transfer case to see if oil is above normal, is so seal needs to be replaced between the transmission and transfer case.

Gear oil does not burn-off. It becomes real dirty/thick and nasty!!

I'm searching on T4R.org to gain more insight on this issue.

Wow, what a pain in the a**. Wish I was rich!! Buy brand new, have personnal mechanic!! ha-ha
