0-70 problem kinda....

So I have a 97 sr5 2wd with low miles on it that I bough last June. I have put just a hair over 10,000 miles on it so far. Now to get to my questions, I like to lay my foot into it A lot, this being said I have never red lined on rpm's. I go 0-60 all the time. I have went from zero to 70 three times since I have owned the in these 3 times after slowing down from 70 right before the vehicle comes to a stop it dies and you can tell that the battery is the only thing on because the brakes and steering wheel gets stiff but your lights are still on, this happened 1 more time under different circumstances I was on he high way and had to go about 75 to pass someone, well 30 miles down the road as I slow down coming into a town it goes dead and the steering wheel was stiffening up so I had to pull on the side of the road real quick. So my runner has went dead in the last 7 months and 10,000 miles just 4 times under those situations above and finally to ask the freaking question. What could cause that to happen? The vehicle never over heated any of those 4 times.

How has your regular maintenance been on the vehicle? How long since the spark plugs were changed out? how long has it been since you've had an oil change? how long has it been since the throttle body has been cleaned? When was the air filter last changed out?

+1 to this. Specifically, on the throttle body cleaning. Look to clean out your IAC circuit.

Do you get any trouble codes? Could be an issue with the VSS.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Oil has been changed every 3000 miles on the dot, and I have a k&n air filter. I'll get my plugs and throttle body cleaned and then go from there.

Sounds a lot like the IAC like what Dan said. It's the Idle Air Controller which has a connector on the bottom of the throttle body. If you do take off the throttle body and clean it, take a look at this thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...ottle-body-adjustment-including-iac-pics.html. Don't forget a new throttle body gasket!

But first, do you have any check engine lights? A P0171 (lean/vacuum leak) will make it die at idle if it's got a large enough leak. If not, the IAC might not opening enough to allow air in at idle, causing it to die.

I'd also run a couple of those injector cleaners, either Lucas or STP or your favorite brand in case your injectors are a little clogged, which would also show up in your idle.

Old spark plugs and wires previously caused my 4Runner to die at idle or on deceleration.
My IAC was stuck in the opposite position of what you guys are describing, as I was having consistently high idle.
