'00 3.4L V6 - K&N FIPK Question?

Has anyone actually done any dyno testing of these FIPK kits done by K&N (or others)?

There seems to be a lot of conflicting info on their performance results. Some say that TRD has done some tinkering and determined that they actually result in lower output, while K&N and others say you will get better throttle response and up to 10% horsepower/torque increase.

Who is correct?

Also, some have talked about the vulnerability of the K&N cold air box replacement to water and mud. I live in Colorado where (those of you who have endured our 100 year drought know) we have very little water. I don't see myself crossing any rivers, or any large standing bodies of water, so I don't see a major problem there.

However, I do drive through some very deep snow. Should I be concerned with the snow kicking-up into the air filter? or is this only really a concern if the truck is actually submerged in deep pools?

Thanks in advance for any help and advise,

Jason

If it rains, you will get water into the engine bay. The unfortunate placement of the K&N puts it over the front wheel.

There is a drain hole where water spray off the front tire can shoot into the engine compartment- in deep water it WILL get in there. This is not harmful at all and you need the holes so you don't get water sitting in your engine compartment. BUT it could get sucked right into the K&N.

I suggested taping up the hole to help prevent that.

Hydrolocking the engine is too great a risk for a benefit that may or may not exist, imo. I do think the K&N looks cool, no doubt it sounds cool. I see alot of little civics and stuff have it so I'm sure it will be ok if you never go off road or anyplace a car would not go.

just my 2 cents

My dad has been running an FIPK 2 on his '03 Tacoma (same 3400 4 cam) for serveral months now through many adverse conditions and it has performed flawlessly, and i have one ready to be installed on my Runner. As for gains i have noticed quite a bit better acceleration and an amazing increase in throttle response, especially after coupled with a poweraid throttle body spacer. But over all, you've gotta love that deep throaty sound. So , imo, if youre thinking about a K&N then definately go for it.
