00 Limited no heat

Hi all.

I got off of work 2 days and on the drive home I realized my 4runner was not blowing hot air. I checked the coolant level, its good. I burped the system via removing the rad cap and letting it warm to operating temperature. No dice. Any ideas?

I did notice a clicking noise behind the glovebox/dash area a week or so ago that is not gone as well..

The vehicle is a 00 limited 4x4 V6.

2 things, could be happening.
your heater core is clogged, <--- unlikely
of your vent door is not operating to switch between hot and cold air.

not sure how the 00s work because of the electronic climate control, im used to the cable ones that attach to the doors. but its most likely a door is stuck.

Your heater control servo motor is probably gone. Mine is gone too, I removed it and I pull the lever to the hot position by hand. You have to push it really hard to move it. Take the small panel out on the passenger side near the floor, it runs back and clips in near the shifter and reaches up front as far as it can go. Look in the area behind 12v outlets. The little black module, that's the one.

Thats your quick fix till you pay the $200+ for the replacement from the stealership, or find a pic&pull type auto wrecker to pick one up used and cheap.

Edit: You may be able to take the little servo motor module apart, take the plastic gear off the shaft, turn it so that the stripped part of the gear is 180 degrees from where it was originally on the shaft. Thus placing good teeth on the other gear it is supposed to operate. Put back together. There is a diy with pics on this forum or somewhere, I think I stumbled across it on a google search.

If the climate control unit is acting crazy or not responding to button presses, then yes. However I am led to believe that the clicking sound in the dash is the stripped gears in the servo motor for his heat control.

I am however planning on using this service for my own, since some of the buttons don't function and you have to press really hard to get others to work. Also it switches erratically to different settings on its own. Others on the forum have had success with these services, make sure you choose one with a lifetime warranty!

I think the servo motor is the right answer! Will check it later today and post results.

Update.


Found the air temp control servo motor. Initially I just removed the motor and manually pushed the arm all the way over and heat was acquired.

I then brought the part inside to dissect it. The large plastic cog was stripped. I flipped it 180 degrees and put it back together. After much swearing I got it re mounted (the rear screw sucked). Works like new.

Free repair good - but should do some maintenance

I had this problem and found this solution worked - but - I wondered how the gear stripped in the first place. And when i tried to work the mechanism manually - with the servo removed, I found it difficult.
I unhooked the cable - and then i unhooked the other end of the cable which is just under the hood behind the engine - it seemed to be connected to a water valve.
It was stiff as blazes. I USED A LUBRICANT that was ok for the plastic sheathing of the control cable and worked it back and forth and lubricated again and then the system worked properly when I re-installed

I forgot to mention that merely moving the gear cog around didn't work UNTIL I lubricated the cable. Yikes - i believe I almost stripped the other side!

Yes - I had to ask myself why it stripped in the first place.

I also found that I had to be careful to test the alignment of the servo arm before re-installing it. i have attached a PDF that shows the direction of the arm. It makes a big difference when re-installing the servo and getting the alignment pins correctly positioned.

Clicking noise

I have a 01 Limited, I have already sent the Climate control in to The Guy on Ebay, works great now, but I do often hear a "clicking", have not pin pointed it, but I thought it was A/C kicking on or off. Could it be my servo motor going out ? Can someone post a pic of where its located, I would also like to know where the cable is on the inside of the engine compartment that needs greased. Maybe I could prevent mine from dieing.

I had a similar problem, but it sounded like more of a gurgle behind the dash. Is that a clogged heater core? Do I have to take my whole dash apart to get to it?
