That blows! $7100 could buy a nicely used 4Runner...even $4200 is a couple grand too much.
For reference, here's what the total cost came to when I had to replace the motor on my wife's '00 4Runner June of last year:
1. Found a stock motor out of a wrecked '00 w/ 120K miles on it (very close to my own mileage) delivered to my buddy's shop = $1060.
2. Timing Belt, Drive Belts, Water Pump, T-Stat, Plugs & Wires, Tensioner, Complete Gasket Kit, Oil, Oil Filter & Antifreeze (we passed on the Idler Pulleys b/c the ones on the replacement motor were still in great shape) = $550.
3. Shop Labor = $850 including tax. (killer deal)
Grand Total = $2,500.00
So yeah, if you decide on keeping the 4Runner, def search around before dropping 4 grand for the dealer to do it.

Miles are 143K & change ( really no big deal IMHO ) My wife's 97 has 160K and runs like new. My 95 T100 ( same engine ) has around 215K and runs great!
I'd drive either one across the country today and not sweat a thing.
The engine in question just had the water pump / timing belt maint. done about 1K ago before the guy rolled it.
If you REALLY want me to do the legwork on shipping the engine, and are serious, I will do it.

Fork lift available at your location?
Phone number.
Do you want insurance?

If your going to go with a local engine, or one with lower miles, that is fine with me. Really. I want you to be happy with what ever you do.
But please don't make me waste my time unless you are serious.
I have done this already and the guy was just " shopping " to get his local guy to lower his price, then "forgot" to tell me for weeks while I kept emailing him.

Just spoke to my mechanic....
He wants $3700 to tow it back from MA, put a used engine in with parts, labor, etc.

Truck should be moved by tomorrow. If I decide to not replace the engine, how much could I get for the truck as is (with needing a new engine). How would I even sell it?

The How much could you get depends on all the other options it has. Also depends on how long you are willing to hang on to it while waiting on a fair to both parties price. Sometimes parting out might be a good way to go and can get a little more money if done right but then it takes labor, more time and you have a shell to get rid of at the end.

mechanic said he has it on the lift and they haven't found any holes in the block yet and will try to crank it by hand....what does this actually mean???

That they will turn the engine over manually (not using the starter) to see if they can get a slow 360-degree turn of the crankshaft w/o interference.

All it will say is that there are no seized cylinders, and from the feel of the crankshaft plus dropping the pan they should be able to tell if any damage has been done to the connecting rods or crankshaft itself. Even if the engine turns over a complete revolution doesn't mean you're home free but probably does say that the block is intact. The damage may be in the top side (valves) as opposed to the bottom side (crankshaft / connecting rods).

I had it towed to my mechanic. The car broke down in MA while I was on vacation. They are doing their own inspection/diagnosis.

Not sure. I'm assuming I'll still need an engine replace/rebuild but they want to take a closer look to see what happened and what is still good or not....

Correct. And it probably doesn't help that I have no clue when it comes to cars/engines, etc.
