I bought a used '01 4Runner SR5 not long ago and it's time for an oil change, but I can't find the oil capacity specs anywhere.

Does anyone know how much oil I need to put in this thing?

Thanks, Brandon

The specs call for 5 1/4 quarts, but it will be close to 6 quarts. I usually put in 5 3/4 and it is just a hare short of full. I notice the oil level will rise a bit when it is hot.

You will need a 14 mm socket for the drain plug.

Well if it is a 3.4 v6, this is what I do on my Tacoma. I use the oil filter for the new 4.0L engines 03 and up v6. They screw right on as if they were stock, but just a bit deeper(more capacity) and just fill with 6qt exactly.

i only put 5 qts in mine. how do you measure your oil? there's 2 dots. i measure mine by the least which is the dot near the end of the stick. it's not required to put it in the second dot, is it?

Well for my 02 Tacoma 3.4 v6 the manual calls for 5.7qts. That gets it about to the second dot -Full- with the larger capacity oil filter 6qts is close enough to the second dot for me.

It sounds like your running your engine with one quart shy. In other threads most people usually put in 6 quarts in thier 3.4 V6. I have put in 6 quarts before, mostly I use 5 3/4.

Running your engine a quart low is not terrible, but it doesn't allow for error, if you burn a quart your engine will now be 2 quarts low. Being a quart low also makes the existing oil be used about 20% more.
