01 4runner traction control problem?

I have a '01 4runner (100,000 miles) and lately the traction control system has been "hyper-sensitive". My tires are in good shape.

On some snowy says, in both 2WD and full-time 4WD, there have been times where the system takes away all power, and I can't move, but no clicking from the traction control system first. Only after holding the pedal down to the floor for several seconds will the car start to crawl and then eventually recovers. When this condition happens, it seems like the system kicks in before any noticable slippage occurs, it just dosen't let me go anywhere.

Another condition that I have been seeing is that when in full-time 4WD (center diff unlocked) and standing still, if I touch the gas pedal slightly the traction control system for the front wheels will sometimes kick in aggressivly (loud clicking). The amount of throttle applied is not enough to even move the car faster than at idle (foot of brake and no gas)..

Overall, it seems that the system has gotten too sensitive, and does not allow any slip whatsoever. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I am concerned about being able to speed up to avoid an accident and not be able to because the system cuts all my power. I don't want to start replacing sensors as they are not cheap (the yaw rate sensor is $1000).

Join the club. The traction control systems in our specific 3rd gens are just too sensitive in general. I've learned to just lock the center diff when it snows now. It at least turns VSC off. Search for the Andymod and you can disable all of your safety systems with the flick of a switch

You can also have your yaw rate sensor recalibrated. I remember seeing a procedure in the FSM about it.

I don't have the FSM handy right now but as I remember it didn't look that complicated. You might check with a stealership or good independent mechanic to see what it would cost. I don't remember if there was any Toyota specific test equipment required but I don't think so.

I have an '01 as well and luckily my stability and traction control is still working well.

Yeah you could get that too I think it's called zero point calibration or something like that
