01 90K Service

My local dealer service shop is haranguing me about the 90K service on my 01 4Runner. I'm sort of an "end user" when it comes to cars, so I don't know if what they're recommending is legit or just a way to get about $900 out of me. Some of the things they are recommending are timing belt, water pump, fuel filter and spark plugs, among a few others. Does anyone here know what I really need done? Of course, I want to perform whatever maintenance is necessary to keep it running great, but don't want to have unnecessary work done or spend unnecessary money. It has 99.5K right now and all I've done to it is brakes, oil changes and tire work.

The dealer is pretty much right. 90,000 miles is when you do the timing belt, water pump and belts. I also changed the transmission fluid and put in new plugs.

The big thing is the timing belt, since it is a non-interference engine and the belt seems to last much longer, you may want to wait, but you take the chance of being stranded on the road. Since I plan giving my car to my Son in a few years, I put off changing the timing belt. I plan on doing it around 120,000 miles or so, before I give it to him. Then it could go till 240,000 miles and I think by then, I would chance going longer.

Members on the forum have gone over 160,000 miles without a change. So, really it is up to you. What do you feel comfortable with. Do you want to be driving with your family on a trip and it go?

I currently have 103,000 miles on my 01. Now, on my Honda and Acura, I change the belt at the recommended time, since they have interference engines. It was 60,000 miles on the Acura and at the dealer I saw a car with 70,000 miles and the belt broke and the engine was toast.

Thanks for the info. Convential wisdom tells me that it's better to be safe than sorry, so I might as well do it.
