01 radio/cd into a 96?

hey all, just bought a 96 sr5.

so i bought a used 01 4runner cd player, it's the big double din one. and it came with the external amp.

the original wires pluged into the amp and the amp plugged into the radio,

but it doesn't turn on and it creats a very loud buzzing sound.


is the radio bad or amp bad or is it just not compatible with my 96 4runner

So are you saying that you bought just a CD player or a double din radio with a CD player in it?

sounds like he bought the whole unit, but its going to be hard to tell which part is bad unless you have someone w/ a good set up to test w/. The "Premium" system in these (like a lot of other toyotas) has a head unit that plugs directly into the amp, then the amp plugs into the normal stereo plugs that 95% of the 87+ toyotas use. i would guess the head unit itself is the issue since the amp is working to the point that it is amplifying the noise, but thats a complete shot in the dark w/ out having it in front of me.

i just pulled a known working setup out of my 00 because i couldn't figure out an easy way of adding a line in and i wanted MP3 player ability. If you can take back the other one, i would probably be willing to sell the one i have.

hey yea i bought the whole thing used from an individual for 40 bucks. i donno if he will take it back.

the picture of a similar one is attached below. it has the external amp that plugs into the stock harness.

i figured it was bad but wasn't sure it it was cuz of compatibility or just an issue with the radio. i'll try returning, is yours the same as this or what is it like? how much are you lookin to get for it? thanks
