02-15-14 | Anza-Borrego Post V-Day Trip Report ................................... (I'm planning round 2 for later in Feb.)


Trip to North End Of Anza-Borrego State Park In Southern California


The Plan
* Get to Anza-Borrego by 9am and start on the trails
* See the North End of the park and then head home
* Take lots of pictures

Gas:
* Since for this trip we are starting at the north end then you can fill up at the station in the town of Anza-Borrego
* But if you are planning a trip to the southern trails I highly suggest filling up at the Chevron just west of Viejas Casino. The gas is cheap and its pretty much the last gas station unless you go into Julian.
* For a southern trails trip Bring 5+ gallons of gas so that you do not have to stop in Anza-Borrego town and fill up. The town gas station is about an hour out of the way if you are visiting the south end of the park.


Required:
* Spare tire
* Lots of water, say 5+ gallons
* Extra food
* Radio: CB or HAM
* Map of the park (seriously .... I'm always surprised people don't have this)

* Five Palms Cut Over Path
* Cut Across Trail
* Buttes Pass Rd. South
* Goat Trail & then turn around
* The Slot Scenic Overview
* Stop at The Slot - we did not go down it since I was alone but it doesn't look that bad
* South again on Buttes Pass Rd. to the 78 HWY

I'll be in that area NEXT weekend for TDS. I won't be involved in the organized run, but I'll be out there watching the wackos and such. Look for the Blue and White FJ62, that's me!

Damn that looks like fun and nice pictures. I really need to make a trip down south with my 4runner. I have friends in SD that I'd like to visit and a family trip down would be fun. Might have to plan it in the next few months.

So I take it you can access Shell Reef or follow San Felipe wash into Ocotillo Wells? I thought that the two OHV areas might have been fenced off from each other. For as many times I've off roaded Ocotillo Wells on dirt bikes or in my old LT trucks, I've never ventured into Borrego Springs (off road at least). I cruise the roads around the outskirts of Borrego at night looking for snakes and geckos throughout the summer though. Cool area and nice pics.

You think most of that trail is 2wd friendly aired down with BFG A/T's and a small lift? I'm so tempted to get out there in the daytime to screw around.

I think if you aired down you would be able to go pretty far. I would really only advise it though if you have another vehicle that is 4WD to pull you out in case something happens. The main issue is that I had to pull off the trail, into the soft sand several times to let another vehicle pass. I even started to get stuck in 4WD once in that sand but I locked the rear and backed up fine. For this trip I did not air down.
