02 4runner with a shot differential please help

Ive got a 2wd 2002 and a few weeks back I was offroading and I hit a burm, it shot my back end up a good 1 and a 1/2 feet and my back left tire hit the ground first, I drove slowly for a few feet noticing a loud clunk at the same time every revolution.
Wasn't sure what happened so I took it to my local shop,they told me that my ring and pinion were stripped out :roadkill:

They quoted me 1800 for a new "pumpkin" diff installed
I was amazed how high this was and i went to another shop and they said 1700 installed

My dilemma is I don't believe I need a whole new differential,and don't have 2k sitting around, I just need the ring and pinion

From the dealer a ring and pinion is 600 + install, wheres a good online store?

Would the internal differential gears be intact and still usable after stripping the ring out?

Right now my plan is to get a used 2002 differential installed for 1000, or get a ring and pinion used for 200 + install

i took it to perfect timing in san marcos they quoted me 1800,then a shop near national city( i forget their name) gave me the 1000 quote, also do you think my internal gears and case should be good?
 
Are you actually able to drive it all over SD the way it is? If so, I doubt it's your R&P.


That said... When I live in SD I used Pro Gear in Kearney Mesa. I haven't lived there for 4 years, but they had an excellent reputation then and I can't imagine that has changed.

You can save yourself a big chunk of money no matter who you deal with by pulling your third member yourself. Do a search on third member removal and you'll find out just how easy it is. This way when you're getting price quotes, you can get a price for the full install, and a price with you just bringing them the third. I think you're going to find that pulling the third is to your financial benefit.

Scotty- thats a great offer and good looking out for a fellow board member.

02 Black- there are a few people in your area that might be able to help with the swap. Then it will only cost your food beverage and maybe a couple bucks in gas for your labor. Additional parts you will need if it is basic 3rd swap: gasket for 3rd $8-$12, 3 qts diff oil, brake fluid and gasket sealer.

I drove it back to my house which was a few hundred feet away, and it sounded like a train going only going 20, at the same moment every time my back end would bounce when the stripped gears hit


Right now im running 33 Grapplers, what is the stock gearing, and what would be the right gearing with the larger tires, I use it as my DD mainly city and highway driving
 
Stock you should be 3.91 or 4.10's. There is a huge debate everytime on what you should run with the larger tires. The answer is anywhere from stock 4.10 to 4.88. My suggestion would be if you don't have the cash sitting around to re-gear everything right now, buy the 3rd from Addicted for $200 and hopefully it will be 4.30 which will be a little better then the 4.10. Then since you are 2wd and like to wheel save up to re-gear and add a locker like the Aussie or ARB. For a really nice 2wd build take a look at Children of Bodoms build thread. I think he went 4.56.
