02 instrument bulbs? 194? too big...

hello all, newbie here. i know this subject has been brought up numerous times because i have searched the forum over and over and came across many threads about replacing\modding the bulbs. the ones i am referring to are the 3 main bulbs in the gauge cluster and the 3 bulbs located in the climate control. i would just like to change them out for a different color but cant seem to find info on the actual sizes or alternative for an 02 guaranteed to fit. almost every thread discussing this topic gives size 194 for the gauges and 74 for the hvac. is there a step i am missing in those DIYs about stretching out the wedge bases because there is no way those sized bulbs are gonna fit directly in the stock bases unless modified. can anyone please take a few minutes to check out this site and let me know which sizes i would need to get? thanks!

The bulbs are not anything that you can find on the internet or at walmart. They are not 192, or anything of that nature. They have a toyota type base, that clips into the cluster. The CC are even smaller bulbs. I just bought 4 bulbs for my climate, and spent $20! I changed my interior to RED using bulb covers from partsexpress.com I looks pretty sweet!! I'll post pics in a day or two.

your right about walmart not havin them but im pretty sure u can find them on the internet somewhere. someone has got to know which size bulbs are needed...
 
i have a 2000 t4r and there are 2 differences between the gauges and climate controls between the 96-98 and 99-02 3rd gen.

on the gauges for the 96-98 that i noticed is the odometer. there are 2 seperate meters which is one for the total milage that you've gone in your for runner which is below the needle and another meter above the needle which is the total miles you've gone on your recent trip after filling it up. on the 99-02 models they changed it to only one odometer which is below the needle... they changed it to the electronic odometer so thats one of the big differences on the gauges... hopefully you guys understand what im trying to say.

now on the climate control the differences i notice was that the 96-98 models have the sliders.. on the 99-02 models. they have the knobs... so im thinking those are the major changes between them also mine is a 2wd..

how about the bulbs wise? what does the newer 3rd gen bulb look like? climate control also?

but yes, i under the newer 3rd gen uses digital odometer and for us, older 3rd gen uses analog.
 
I'll take some pics of my bad ones tonight, and post it up. I wish I had a 96-98....I just spent $20 for 4 bulbs at the dealer. I searched for hours, and couldn't find anybody that sold the bulbs. Not even any online vendors. It kinda sucks, but oh well.

ever thought about buying indiglo gauges for the same price? :biggrin2:

Indiglo's don't look anywhere close to what I think he's trying to achieve.

Personally - I would love to see a MK4 VW-style cluster

well, personally, i think if you change the bulbs, the lighting will be uneven. few spots are more brighter than other places. that's how my CC is. since there's only one LED in the center for my '97 t4r. but everyone has their own taste. =)
 
ok, ive done alot of searchin and still have not came up with a definite answer on what size the bulbs are. the 3 main bulbs in the gauge cluster are smaller then a 194 10mm bulb but larger then a 74 5mm bulb. so for those bulbs i ordered a few of a un-common size bulb, which is a 24 7mm. the climate control bulbs are a little bit smaller then a 74 so for those i ordered some 3mm 12v micro-lamps and will give them a try and see what happens. i should be recieving all the bulbs (not stock green)sometime this week. i will keep u guys updated after i try them out and will post pictures if the results are good.

how about take those bulbs off and take a picture?
 
ok i will take pictures when i take them out to try on the new bulbs. i will take side by side shots as well to see if the old and new bulbs match up in sizes.
