02 runner 4by front shaft spins in 2wd

I thought I broke an axle so I replaced it. I put it in 4 wheel today, the front end made a loud bang, felt like a slip. my truck still climbs no problem but just occasionally does the same thing. I don't like it, something feels wrong. so I put it back in 2 wheel and took off slowly. I felt the same thing but not as bad :. I got my camera and sure enough my front axle spins after a couple of feet in 2wheel. I know its not supposed to engage.
when I broke my axle the first time I had it in 4 wheel with the center diff locked heard a loud bang. after that my buddy mentioned that both of the front tires spun at the same time when I was trying to get unstuck as if I had a front locker but I don't. so if anybody out there can help me out that would be awesome

dang usually I get a response within 5 min or so. this sucks I cant find anything online about this.

You should differentiate between your driveshaft and your axle.

It's possible that you broke the spider gears in the differential.

Jack front of truck up. Spin tires. Should tell you instantly if your front end is blown.

well jacked up my truck, yep only the driverside axle makes the front drive shaft spin after a full rotation on the tire ,both forwards and reverse but not the passenger side. brand new axle on the driverside.
any info or diagnostic of whats the problem or how to fix it??

That's not necessarily that unreasonable for an open differential. If spinning one tire by hand (Not using the DS) forward, does the other spin opposite?

The front axles are supposed to turn all the time unless you have lockout hubs which disengage the axleshaft from the wheel/tire assembly.

Id say the spider gears are blown and/or locked up. In 2WD, the ADD system will disconnect the passenger side axle from the diff and then it will just spin the spider gears and the passenger side output will rotate the opposite direction.

Either way, the driveshaft shouldn't spin in 2wd.

Cheapest way is you need to find a matching gearset to your rear end going off vin # to find what gears you have. Or take the front and rears from a donor vehicle. Or you could buy a new front and rear gearset ready to drop in but would run at least $1200. Or buy all the gears yourself and assemble. Search is your friend, you will find what you need.

VIN tag for gearset isn't 100% accurate. Mine could be either 4.10 or 4.30 based on the tag. Paint color on the pinion is accurate though.

well I removed my front diff and took it for repair at a local shop yotamasters just waiting for the damage report

got the report my front diff is gone, i need to rebuild stock or rebuild in a new gear ratio. cheapest option would be finding a front diff or 02 with 4.10 gear ratio.
