02 transmssion shudder

I have a 2002 runner with about 135,000 on it. Automatic transmission was serviced about 10K ago. I am having this issue where when I am creeping in heavy traffic, the runner transmission shudders a little bit. I add some pedal and it stops. Also, whenever I come to a stop after driving at highway speed and when I press on the the gas again to go, the engine sometimes revs and the tranny clunks hard and off I go. If I manually downshift, this doesn't happen, and also it doesn't happen everytime I stop. Thanks for a reply.

That was my life about a year ago. Same symptoms. Look for the gear slippage to get progressively worse.

In my case, it was the first gear shift sprag that was worn. It's a rebuild or replace kind of situation. I opted to replace the transmission with one from a rolled 4runner. Mileage was much lower, so I went for it. All is OK 8 months later.

Check the obvious things first...fluid level and condition. Drop the pan, look for metal or discolored fluid.

Crap!!! My 01 Surf does the shudder thing too every once in a while, but I have 70,000 KM (approx 44k miles) so am kinda hoping its too early for internal tranny issues. It happens most often when coming off high speed driving to a stop light/sign, so am thinking maybe the fluid is foaming in there or something. My truck has NEVER had a tranny fluid change in 9 years (I know, I know) and it has the much hated type IV stuff too. Definitely time for tranny fluid change....

Your problem may be just that you need to grease your driveshaft and u-joints. Check the u-joints for up/down or side/side play while your under there too, they might be going bad. Hopefully it's not the tranny, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to srvice that too.

I hope that it is not the case with a worn sprag. I am hoping that it might only involve lubing the driveshaft and checking the u joints. That would be much cheaper.
I also had done some looking around, and there might be an issue with some linkage adjustment.
Incidently, the runner didn't repeat the shudder during several short runs today.
