03 4Runner vs Small sedan

While traveling in rush hour traffic at about 80 mph, I got tagged in the back end by a small Nissian sedan. He spun around in a circle and and I stopped after the traffic scattered. No one else hit anything. What I saw was a big surprise. My rubber towing hitch cover was torn and there were severl small cuts in the rear bumper, nothing else. The Nissian's bumper was trash, the hood was pushed up and it was hissing. I gave the other driver the rest of his bumper back. When I started to exchange information, the Nissian driver smiled, said he lived in T.J. and left. That's a problem here in San Diego, but my 4Runner, all things considered, is okay.

I am shocked at the small amount of damage after being tagged on the freeway. I think that the ladder frame and trailer hitch did a good job and a uni-body vehicle would have been a mess.

Good for you! However, i would still check the frame for any small damage. Get a L-shaped thing (ruler, tool) and make sure the frame and crossmember is still 90 degree in the back part of your truck.

I work in a hotrod fabrication shop and we checked the frame for square and diamond. I am surprised at how square the frame is, I can tell you that brand new GM or Ford trucks are no where close to the measurements we got.
