'03 differential breather

I'm going to extend my air breather on my '03 rear differential, where is a good place to mount it? I've seen putting it in the gas fill area, but that scares me more than just leaving it. Any other suggestions? Are there any other breathers that I have to extend?

I have mine located in the gas fill area. It's the highest point possible back there and by the time water goes that high, your truck is basically under water.

I don't see where else you would want to place it though.

Front and rear diffs have breathers, also an auto tranny should, and maybe even the t-case on the new ones (don't know for sure, mine are mid-80's).

Don't you worry about spilled gas getting in there? I mean, I'm cautious when it comes to filling up but accidents and wives happen.

I put mine just behind the rubber gasket in the gas area. To get gas in it would take a direct hit through the gasket. I figured that there is no realistic way that would happen.

DOnt worry about spilling gas in there. It still has the breather cap on it, which only opens with pressure from the diff. SO even if you drown the whole gas cap area in gas it will not get gas in it. Even if it gets a little it would not even be enough to reach the diff or do anything to the gear oil.

In my old '02 4runner, i ran the tube behind the rear bumper, up the side of the rear cargo door, and into the rear taillight housing. I am not sure if this is still possible with the 4th gen 4runner or not. I like this because the breather is completely protected behind the housing and it is in a high place.
