'03 Fog Lights

Does anyone think there is a way so that the fog lights can be turned on without having the headlights on? Sometimes i would just like to have the marker and fogs on, i guess you would have to run a seperate switch....any ideas are welcome

I asked the same question to my brother who is a Toyota Tech. He said it was against the law to do that.

Since we are on the subject I know that after market fog lights are just too bright for the human eye, so driving with them is a no no. But I have driven with the stock fog lights on and never got flashed, and even stand in front of the vehicle and did not see a problem having them on. So when you say against the law, is it against the law if they are only too much for the human eye?

Fog Lamps Only -- Against the Law?

In Nevada, the Fog Lamp law reads as follows:

NRS 484.577...Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two fog lamps...so aimed that when the vehicle is not loaded none of the high-intensity portion of the light to the left of center of the vehicle shall at a distance of 25 feet ahead project higher than a level of 4 inches below the level of the center of the lamp from which it comes. Such lighted fog lamps may be used with lower head lamp beams as provided in NRS 484.587.

The kicker is this:

NRS 484.587 Equipment for lighting road with multiple beams...There shall be an uppermost distribution of light, or composite beam, so aimed and of such intensity to reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least 350 feet ahead...

The law limits the projection of light from Fog Lamps, but requires sufficient light to illuminate 350 feet ahead; therefore, Fog Lamps alone do not meet the requirements...

I'm sure other States' laws are similar.

Legal or not I would like to be able to run the fogs with the parking lights or just to fogs for that matter. I guess we need to know which wire limits power to only when the head lights are on. I bet if you figure out how to run it independantly you can run them with the high beams as well. Any wireing dirgrams out there we can check?

all factory fog lights come pre-wired in conjunction w/ the headlights. when the hi-beams are on, the fog lights shut off..

to fix this or better yet, to be able to use the fog lights whenever you please, just rewire the power/trigger line that powers the fog lights directly to the power source :) all it takes is one line to be re-routed.

not sure which one as i don't have the svc manual handy w/ me but i'm sure someone has one nearby that can help ya guys out.

as for the legality of it all... just about anything modified can be illegal (darn lame legal sys). but then again, not like this has stopped any of us anyway right? hehe

I had asked about this a while back and couldn't find an answer. I had done this on my Maxima and loved it, but I had some help....let me rephrase that......I stood around and watched as a friend of mine did it. Somehow he spliced the fog light to the side marker lights so when the side marker light came on the fog lights would have powere. At that point I could ether leave them on or turn them off. I can't remember, but I think the fogs could stay on when the high beams were on as well. Hopefully somebody will have a wiring diagram to do this. If not, I am not going to push my luck..:D
