03 transmission shake from brake to gas

I just purchased a 03 V8 SR5, which i was shocked that i would ever own. I hated SUVs and always loved 2 wheel drive coupes, but i fell in love with the new 4 runner styling.

After 1 month of ownership i have noticed that if i come to a stop, and then switching from brake to gas the transmission will shudder. This does not occur everytime. I checked the trans fluid and its at the correct level. Any ideas? I would like to know if anyone else had this problem before i ask the dealership.

Welcome to the forum, the shake is not normal. Might not be the transmission. Have the dealer check it out.

I have the same problem. Mine is 2004 v6 4x4 and i have 8600 miles on it. It started at about 8000 miles. I'm not sure if I should go to dealer because it doesn't happen every time only from time to time so they will say that they don't know where the problem is if during their test drive nothing happen. However I think it is happening more often everyday so maybe next week I'll take it to dealer. We'll see what they say.

The driveshaft need to be lubed. This thread, http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=975 has the full scoop. I had the same problem and the dealer said it was normal. I bought a grease gun and hit the U joints and the two sliding yokes and the problem is gone.

Please let me know how that dealer visit go. From what I read here some of them just say it is normal and they don't want to do anything. I'll try to visit few of them and ask about it..

I guess that depends on what you define normal as. Many 4Runners have this problem, and it can be 'fixed' by lubing the slip joint in the rear drive shaft. But, it will return after a while. If you check the owners manual, it recommends lubing the drive train on a regular basis. There is a TSB out about the problem, and the dealer should be able to find it. That is, if they aren't too lazy.

I get the oil/filter changed every 3750 miles at the dealer. Everytime I have to tell them to grease the driveline, half the time they try and tell me that there is nothing to grease. Have to get someone up front to convince them and ask that the grease monkey doing the work knows it should be done. Had it done again a couple of weeks ago. New service writer, didn't argue so I thought they would do the greasing of the zerts. Got the reciept after the work was done and nothing was checked in the "grease" section. I didn't say a word since I would be back in a couple of weeks for the tire rotation drill and would then make sure they did the grease job on my drivetrain zert's. As luck would have it a couple of days after the oil/filter change I got one of the service surveys about my recent service from Toyota ( the kind that the dealer writes you about begging that if you had any problems to let them know and lie on the survey saying how great they are). Well I burned their butt up on sloppy work (alway have to go to the car wash and wash the bottom of my engine off since they get oil all over the place and then it will drip on my garage floor) also nailed them on the fact that the service writer and the tech that does the oil/filter changes don't know the requirements of the vehicles and never grease my drivetrain and I have to supervise the work to make sure it gets greased. I hope they get some bad marks and the Service Manager does some training. I'm getting tire of the game!!!

Pitbull, time to find a new dealer. Toyota specifically states in the maintenance log (page 42) to lubricate propeller shaft.

They are all like that, since they all have good/bad employee's and this oil/filter changing is a low level job. I had a Lexus dealer that forgot to put oil in my wifes car and they have the real mechanic's do the oil/filter changes. You have to check all of their work before you leave the lot. Figure since I'm retired and I only have them do one thing at a time to my 4runner (example, oil/filter change one trip and tire rotation a couple of thousand miles later) I have the advantage of making sure my car is taken care of. I feel sorry for the owners that just take their cars in around the time it needs service and just has faith that the dealer did the job correctly. I would say odds are that they will not get what they pay for 25% of the time (just a guess) based on my experience.
