'03 v6 sr5 vs. '04 wrx

After work on saturday, a co worker and I went to grab a bite to eat. He drives a silver 2004 Subaru WRX--and it was me, in my 2003 sr5 v6. We're both bone stock. On the freeway, he downshifted and slowed to 55mph. We were side by side and he honked the horn 3 times and took off. I opened it up as soon as he did. I kept up with him all the way until I hit that POS governor that kicks in at 115. So at the exit he was pretty impressed; and mad about how his car is too slow. We took the turn and going down the surface streets, he was in 2nd gear (he said) when he floored it. I also floored it and I kept it side by side with him all the way down the street. It was pretty cool. Just thought I'd let you guys know just how fast we are in comparison. :cool:

That's pretty cool, I heard that the V8 4Runner is the fastest production vehicle Toyota currently makes. The V6 isn't far behind either!
 
Yesterday, I was at the tollbooth and there was an old Porsche 911 Carrera next to me. I figured that I would give it a shot and floor it to try to beat him out. He MUST have not been trying or underestimated the power of my 4Runner, but I beat him out. I know he has a lot more power than me and if he tried, he would have killed me. It was fun though!

That is pretty decent. Tell your friend just to wait for one curve, that will change things pretty quick. :D

(By the way I just read Saab is making a new car based on the Subaru WRX. I'm not kidding.:confused: )

Check the the thread on when I ran against my buddies v8... not far behind?.... actually beat him at the track w/ the v6... too many variables (tires, etc) to make it a perfect test, but I wouldn't put the v6 behind the v8 :) I'd call closer to a tie...

Yeah I've heard that too Peter78! No joke, but people have been calling it the Saabaru :D

SD4RUNNER - You beat me to it. But you making the statement yourself really brings home the point :cool:

Is the V8 4Runner really the fastest production Toyota? Doesn't make sense. I'm sure some Celica GTS or the MR-Spyder guys aren't too happy with that :confused: so I'm calling that statment BS ;):

If anything I would guess the Solara V6 to be the fastest, the Celica and the MR-2 are quick and nimble but the Solara felt to get up to 60 the fastest. The person who told me was the salesmen trying to get me to buy a 4Runner so its possible BS, but that 4Runner does get up there pretty damn quick.

Oh and the V6 may be just as quick as the V8, but I <3 my torque :D
 
The celica is sloooooow, I know by expreince. The WRX isn't too much quicker than the GT-S. Try going up againist the STi or a tubro'd MR-S, it'll probably be a different story. The Saabaru, is just a dreesed up WRX wagon, but it is more refined, but I wouldn't drop a dime on that.

Your co-worker can't drive, no offense. At 55 mph, the WRX rpm's are just hitting turbo in third gear, at which point it's game over for the 4runner. Chances are your buddy mis-shifted - in turn causing you to pull ahead until he could figure out which gear to throw it in. The gear boxes in the suburu's are tight, being a 04 it is doubtful he has really mastered the shifting. On top of that you got turbo, so a number of factors come into play. You still held him though, so thats what counts at the end, who wins, right?....

Doubtful, and I'm calling BS. You beat me by 4/1000 of a second! Stock for Stock, the V8 will take the V6 hands down everytime. Don't get me wrong, I like that new VVTI motor as much as everyone else that couldn't get the 8... It would be interesting to run your rig against mine again in the 1/4 mile, given our recent tire changes...But who cares, these are off road vehicles, not wrx's, evolution's, or 4.8 X5's for that matter!!!

I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, as you saw my posting was not that the v6 is faster but they are dead even. As we saw, even after we left the track and hit it on the open roads, (both driving each other's cars), the v6 pulled away from me slowly (driving your v8) - yes it had slightly bigger tires (not even wider) but your times, if you will look at your slips, were CONSISTENTLY slower then me almost every time...

You say the v8 wins every time, but I look at the numbers... I was ready to say the v8 wins before we even raced at the track..if we want to slice hairs, I realized you were at least 30 lbs lighter in gas as well, which i never made a note of.
Off the line, AWD and more torque will do the trick against the v6 early on....but as the numbers show on our slips my MPH was higher as we started to get down the track...

we can tear at these numbers every day, the v8 owners are proud , the v6 owners are suprised and happy with their purchase, as I am...

Lets run with the new tire setup, I'm game....I don't think you will like the results given we have both effectively cancelled each other out with yet another +1 tire size change...

Once these rigs get rolling, the torque is MUCH less of an issue and HP comes into play... know this....Motortrend ran your v8 with a 15.9 1.4 mile... I ran a 15.862 with a 3" lift.... do the math... this is a not a v8 wins it every time scenario...

This is true, while the torque gets you going and gives the V8 better acceleration from a stop, the V6 does have more horsepower - which is more useful in the upper range of the tach.

On a completly unrelated note, does the iForce V8 have any time of variable valve timing? I know its a DOHC setup but I wasn't sure what the 'iForce' actually ment. Anybody know exactly?

Like you said the numbers don't lie. I was also taking notice that the trap speeds were much higher on the V6. The V6 seems much more rev happy than the V8 and your hypothesis that the AWD and Torque give the V8 a decided advantage 0-60 seems to be dead on. After its rolling though the VVTI seems to kick in and give the V6 a second wind.

Oh BTW, it's not that some people couldn't get the V8, it's that some people didn't want the v8. ;):

Here we go again on the V6 vs V8.....

My suggestion lets settle it once and for all. Lets get a track day for a 1/4 and get at least 6 samples of each (10 would be better). And we run them as we do on the street with a full tank of gas (or close to), spare, standard tools, etc. We list all the mods done as well, so we know what we have. I will probably be the slowest as I have a limited with a ton of options, Daystar lift and 265/70/17, and I weight more than 230lb. This wil give a far better indication.

I also found that mine started feeling more nippy around 10k miles and the gas ileage improved slightly around that time. WHich tells me 10k is probably the magic mark for performance on these engines.

Afterwards we should go wheeling, offcourse :D

SO we can have a fine weekend. Even if we can't get a conclusive answer, we can at least have a great weekend.:cool:

Nope the V8 is still on older gen engine, so it doesn't have variable valve timing or even a varaible intake system. It was not required originally as the motor was intended for low to mid torque and not HP, hence it only get 235HP from a DOHC 4.7l V8. This might change given the status of the current competition, especially where Lexus competes (BMW, MB, New Land Rover, Range Rover) as the Lexus has a distinct disadvantage in the HP department. SO when they upgrade the "poor" Toyota guys will probably benefit.

Hell even Chevy gets more HP (285) out of their old pushrod 4.8 V8!!
