03 VS 04 4R, any differences

I know several improvements were made in 04, but not sure what all that includes.

It depends on which model you are looking at.
Early 2003 (before April/May 2003) SR5's and Sports have gray cladding all around the bottom of the car. Early Sports also have silver-painted door handles, front grille and rear license plate garnish. Later 2003's have painted cladding that came in a package. For the SR5 it included: painted lower cladding, front and rear bumpers and rear license plate garnish, standard black running boards, fog lights and 16" 6-spoke alloy wheels. For the Sport Edition it included: painted lower cladding, front and rear bumpers, door handles, grille and rear license plate garnish and standard black running boards. Early 2003 V8's have a weight-carrying hitch while later 2003's have a weight-distributing hitch. There were also some color changes during the mid-2003 change, Natural White, which was originally unavailable on Sports was made available and they took out Imperial Jade Mica (dark green) and Impulse Red Pearl (red).
Basic changes in 2004 include a standard tire pressure monitoring system and the gauges are illuminated once you start the engine (vs 2003 where they only turn on when you turn on the headlights). SR5 models no longer have a telescoping steering wheel. There is an option for the third-row seats on SR5's and Limiteds.
That's all that I can think of right now. Hope it helps you out.

Yeah I guess it would have helped a little more if I said what model they were. They're both LTDs. So basically just a few cosmetic changes. I like the tire pressure monitoring idea, not sure its worth the price difference. I'm looking at one from a toyota dealer, 04 LTD 36K Km for about $39K CDN plus the 6%tax or the 03 LTD 37K Km which is private for about $35K I figure and no tax, Hmmm. I suppose there would have to be a good deal of differences to make it pay to get the 04.

The only other changes from 03 to 04 are the rollover-sensing for the side airbags and the conversion to ATF WS from ATF T-IV.
The ATF change is an active topic right now on the Maintenance forum.
The rollover sensing allows the computer to detect a rollover situation and to deploy the side curtain airbags. (Normally, the airbags only deploy in the event of a collision.) There's also an "RSCA Cutoff" switch to override this feature if desired.

You don't have to pay tax on a private sale in Canada? Here in CA the seller has to declare a (reasonable) sale price when signing over title and the buyer must then pay the tax to the DMV before getting registration.
Of course, most people under-report the sale price, but too much and DMV will get suspicious. A friend of mine paid tax on half what she bought the car for... when she went to the DMV the woman at the counter commented "wow you got a great price". Not sure if she was being sarcastic or not!

I've got a 2003 Ltd and I've had no trouble what-so-ever. The V8 has been fantastic.
Quick question though about that load carrying or load-distributing that came on the later 2003's... What's the easiest way to tell that? After looking underneath it appears my hitch receiver bolts to the bottom and front edge of the bumper, and it is not the larger bar that would connect to frame points toward the sides of the bumper.
Any other characteristics that people could look for when checking out an '03? This guy chosing between the '03 and the '04 might even want to check and see which hitch the '03 he is looking at is equipped with.

Gotcha. I have seen a few of those tubular hitches and always thought they might've been aftermarket from Draw-Tite, etc. Looks like they actually mounted the receiver on the weight-distributing hitches below the actual bumper cut-out.
