on wife's commute she got rear ended by honda accord. stop & go traffic, guy was not paying attention. the accord got disabled, thanks to the trailer hitch (I believe it took out his radiator, his car had to be towed). the 4runner looks good, just small scratches on the bumper. is there anything I need to check? do i need to have toyota check the frame? we don't have the police report yet, wife was let go w/o incident, we believe he will get a ticket. any advice appreciated.

hope you got his insurance information. the hitch could be damage (bent). you might as well check the frame too. you said stop n go traffic? how fast was he going? hope everything checks out fine for you.

To be safe you will want to have your truck looked at by a local body shop for any damage. You may also want your wife to monitor her condition as symptoms may not show up for weeks after the accident (whiplash, back pain, etc.). If you didn't get the other drivers insurance information then you can request a copy of the police report which will have all that information.
I was rearended almost 2 years ago and suffered a head injury. I never did anything about it because the person who hit me didn't have insurance, or so I was told. A few months back I was talking to a personal injury lawyer who I had become friends with and the subject came up. He went after the driver and found out he did in fact have insurance through the Maryland Uninsured Motorist Fund. I settled the claim out of court for $1200. If I had pursued this after it first happend it would of been worth at least $20,000 if I settled without going to court. Don't let the same thing happen to you. If you were not at fault then you deserve to be paid for your injury.

Good to hear your wife is ok. I would definitely get the frame checked. Be on the safe side and make sure everything is square and not bent out of spec.
I guess this gives me one more reason to get one of those hitch steps for the rear. It should say something like,
"Major front damage for you, none for me"
That should at least get the attention of whomever tailgaits too close to me.

update
we took the truck to get 2 estimates, they both reported NO DAMAGE!!! 1 was from his insurance company's people, the other was a collision repair place that our local toyota referred us to (they use them).
we are taking it back tomorrow for them to put on a lift & do measurements.

Even though there appears to be No Damage you might consider having all the bolts replaced that are used to attach the hitch to the frame. The accident could have stressed these bolts and you would not even know it until a bolt snaps later on. Not something you want to have happen when you are towing.
Better to have the insurance company pay for this now than you pay for it later. If the insurance company objects to the bolt replacement ask them to give you a letter taking responsibility for any future accident caused by these bolts failing.

99% of whiplash injuries are not going to show much of anything on an X-ray, MRI, CT scan, whatever. You MAY see a slight straightening of the c-spine (a slight loss of our normal neck curvature), which can be indicative of muscle spasm, a common result of a whiplash type injury. These kinds of things are diagnosed by taking a good history and doing a good physical examination, as is true for most of medicine. Imaging studies and labwork is only supposed to add support for the diagnosis.
If someone has neck or back pain after an accident like this, a trip to the doctor will easily diagnose the problem. Unless there is some kind of underlying medical problem, people do not break their neck or herniate a disc after an accident like this.
