04 90K service cost

HI, I was wondering what you feel is a fair price for 90k service on a
04 V6 4x4 4runner. I think it has a timing chain so no service needed on that

I also would want the water pump and thermostat replaced.

What specifically does the 90k service cover? Can you list all the items? If it includes the timing belt, then you can count on close to or over $1000 if you include the water pump and t-stat.

Here's what's recommended:


Replace engine oil and oil filter
Rotate tires
Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD)
Replace spark plugs (1GR-FE engine)
Replace timing belt (2UZ-FE)
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace engine air filter
Replace cabin air filter (if equipped)

Inspect the following:
Automatic transmission fluid
Ball joints and dust covers
Brake lines and hoses
Brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs 4
Drive belts
Drive shaft boots (4WD)
Engine coolant
Exhaust pipes and mountings
Front differential oil (4WD)
Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses
Fuel tank cap gasket
Radiator, condenser and/or intercooler
Rear differential oil
Steering gear box
Steering linkage and boots
Transfer case oil (4WD)


Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions:

Driving While Towing
Replace front differential oil (4WD)
Replace rear differential oil, including limited-slip

I highly recommend following the list John posted and include those "special operating conditions" items. I would add a transmission fluid change unless you had it done at 60k.

IMHO, 90k is a bit early for the water pump/t-stat. I would wait 'til 120k based on very few failures reported and I don't think there are any below 120k. I am a preventative maint freak and I'll wait 'til 120k. At 120k I would carefully inspect and probably replace idlers and the fan clutch too, that's just me... Maybe 150k is the right mileage for those, I don't know.

There's also nothing majic about any of those items that Toyota needs to do it. Simply print the list. The only 'special' Toyota stuff required is anti-freeze and transmission fluid. Point that out and make sure the shop uses the 'right stuff'.

Where you guys find this info. Would be interesting to take a look at other intervals
 
Half the stuff on the list is simple DIY. You can knock the cost of the service down a lot by doing some of that yourself.

Anyone that pays the dealer to change the air filter, cabin air filter and to do an oil change is wasting money. Other fluid changes should be part of normal preventive maintenance and done at an interval that suits your driving style and conditions.

Of all my Toyotas, I never had a water pump fail on me (although I replaced them typically at every or every other timing belt change, depending on which vehicle).

At 90k, I would do the following, if it were my rig.

- Transmission flush. I understand it's a sealed unit and they say it's a "lifetime" fluid. I don't buy it. I'd have the dealer do this.

- Differential and transfer case fluid with synthetic. 75w-90 DIY.

- Coolant flush. Toyota red. Do this yourself VERY easily.

- Spark plugs. OEM Toyota. DIY.

- Check brake system, belts, filters, etc.

That's it.

:iagree: but I'd add grease the driveshaft (duh) and I think an '04 V6 trans uses a dipstick and type IV fluid rather than the 'lifetime' fluid. I may be :confused: The list p nut listed covers the items that'll help to ensure a long, trouble free life...

Most of the other items are in the "duh" category and are the things you look at anytime you go under the vehicle/hood.

Thinks I've done at 60K

1) Moved over to Synthetic Gear oil, Front, transfer case and rear diff. Good for another 100K.

2) Coolant flush. Real easy.. Get toyota red, some distilled water and a rubber tube from Home Depot.

Drain, refill, drain refill...

3) air filters

4) spark plugs.

5) tranny flush at dealer

Things I'm going to do at 90K

1) Serpentine belt (first time changing)

2) spark plugs

3) air filters
 
My 03 t4r is just hitting 80k miles. Should I think about getting my timing belt changed or can it wait till 90k?

Also does anyone know a good indi shop in near SLC, UT to do the work instead of the stealership?

And yes i will have the water pump changed at the same time :)

This brings up a couple of questions I have been meaning to ask....

1.) How much money is ACTUALLY SAVED by having the water pump replaced when the timing belt is also replaced?
Does anyone have an actual dollar savings?

2.) When the water pump on a 4runner does wear out from age/use what actually happens?
Does the impeller sieze up and the engine overheat?
Does the water pump simply start leaking coolant from a weep hole which is the sign to replace the pump?

With my VWs I easily see 120-150K+ miles on a water pump.
I just replaced a pump on one of them last summer at 149K miles. It started leaking and I replaced it.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for preventative maintenance.
I just wonder about the cost/benefit of replacing some parts before they actually wear out.
This is especially true if the part being replaced may easily last 1, 2 or 3 more years before it wears out.
Why spend the money before one really has to especially if the savings do not amount to all that much?

Typically you are saving about $200 having the pump replaced at the same time as your belt. Sometimes these last longer, other times, about 100k is all you're going to get. That means if you replace the belt at 90k, then 10k later tear everything apart to replace the water pump, you are spending too much money. It's a gamble how long it will last... better to be safe than sorry. An engine that seizes is a lot more expensive.

I would say $200 might be a little conservative. Even if you got 150k on the water pump you'd still be almost double paying on the labor. Then, let's assume, you hear it/smell it whatever and you catch it prior to a catastrophic failure what do you do? Do you get a new belt early(150k instead of 180k) and pay for that labor? Unless you're a serious DIY guy and don't mind putting in your own 'free' labor it's just cheaper/better to keep the t-belt and pulleys on the same schedule due to the duplication of labor. The cost of labor exceeds the cost of the parts so just 'suck-it-up'.

That's my 2cents...
