04 V6 with 140k miles, should I replace the water pump?

there's nothing wrong with it, now. maintenance has always been on schedule and with the correct Toyota super long life coolant, the pink one. water temp has been good, no noise either.

normally I'd have replaced the timing belt and water pump together no more than 120k, but since the 2GR has a timing chain, there's no need to replace it, so here is my question, should I replace the water pump any way as a preventive maintenance or wait longer?

it's my wife's DD, she's not the type of person who pays attention on how cars operate.

Since all of my 5 previous Toyotas had timing belts, I would replace the water pump at each belt replacement as PM. As such, I never had a water pump that went much beyond 120k miles so I can't say what the typical life expectancy of the pump is.

If it worries you and you can afford it, have it done. But research it first to see if you're near the pumps end-of-life or not.

Water pump failures are not typically catastrophic. You should get some signals like squealing of the bearing, squealing of wet belts, smell of coolant, low coolant, coolant on the garage floor. You might want to up the frequency of inspections, checking for low coolant at least weekly. Best to do it in the morning before driving when it'll be consistently at the low mark.

If you do decided to change it, it would be a good chance to upgrade it to the tacoma engine oil cooler.

:iagree:I would add, using a firm grip and medium pressure, grab the fan and try to wiggle it. (That just sounds wrong:lmao: )It's an opportunity to check for bearing slop, a prelude to failure and you get to check play in the fan-clutch too. A little play in the fan-clutch is 'normal', there should be no visible movement of the water pump shaft.
