05-09 4.7L Doug Thorley Headers, group buy

spoon-fed info always does :biggrin1:

my rig has 150k on her and i presume would need new cats. i dont think i would install new headers with old cats. how does removing the cats affect the ability to pass typical state inspections (PA has emissions, no idea what it entails)? i'm guessing this is the question of 'legality' within the thread?

saving on not having to replace the cats helps. a simulator isn't much of a cost against the cats i guess. Thanks for the clarity.

They probably aren't bad. They last a long time.
I have no clue the emission laws there but you can replace cats when they go bad. Weld a new one in and you're good to go. Jason B can get you some nice magnaflow cats or anything else you need for that matter.
Toyota sensors are touchy. Sometimes no matter what you do it will throw a code. That means you have to get the simulator or one of the other tricks to fool the computer. Install the headers and new cats if getting them and see what happens.

Since everyone asked for my oppinion I am inclined to give it. This is a really cool project but if I were to do it I would start with the headers and install all new all the way back. Why go through all that work to cheap out on new exhaust etc?

I agree completely.

Anymore info on this "code thrown", is it a light that shows on the dashboard? Aren't these on back order or something? What I'm really concerned for is the installer not knowing what or how to do with this simulator. Where does it even go?

We're in this together
unfortunately i still am as well. this GB came up quickly (i never expected one honestly) and this was one project i hadn't done my research on. the more i look into this, the more i get confused.

i just dont have the dough ATM to justify spending all of said dough just to save like $80. between the headers, possible cats, possible muffler, possible O2 sensors or sensor fakeouts, misc gaskets/hardware and labor specifics this is one project i would require a write-up or need much more time to research.

it doesn't help i'm on work travel for three weeks and can't do any of this welding work myself.

PM your number, we're in this together! lol
If you guys are just looking at replacing your existing manifold and keeping the stock catalytic converters then the pipe gets cut right in front of the first cat, then the header gets welded in. Nothing further is required.
If you want high flow cats then those will need to be welded in and a y-pipe built to replace that stock setup. Also, if you go high flow cats, or none as I have, you will need a simulator to trick the computer.
Does that clear it up a little?

To my understanding the pipes on the new headers are larger in diameter than the stock pipes. Not to mention they're rusted to all hell. If I did want to get new catalytic converters, would I need all three and would they need to go in the same stock spot they're in now?

Any shop installing these will be able to hook it all up without issue. The headers come with instructions as well. I personally agree that the whole thing should be replaced as exhaust pipe rusts out, but if yours is in good shape you don't have too.
This is not a "do it myself" project for you or anyone else asking these questions. I'm very capable and I didn't mess with it, I took it to a shop gladly.
As for the O2 simulator. The plug and play unit is on back order. You literally unplug your O2 sensors from the harness, about 6 inches from the actual sensor, plug into the URD simulator, then the simulator plugs into where your O2 originally was plugged in. Very self explanatory if you actually saw it.
Since they are having issues with getting the plugs and they are on backorder, I personally bought the universal one which requires me cutting and splicing wires. Not for the amateur. But, a shop could do it as it is basic mechanics to know how to mess with wiring. Whether they'll do it or not is another matter completely.
Yes, when your sensor makes the computer throw a code your check engine light comes on, as well as several others. You lose traction control and abs as well until it is fixed.

Thanks t-man

I will print this info and review it with an installer once I find one that wont take advantage of me.

For this URD simulator; do you have link to the universal and specific model for our Runners? I looked on there site and couldn't seem to find it

Link is giving me fits. Go to URD website. On the left under "electronics" is rear sensor simulator. Click on that and the options open up.

Did anyone get tracking info yet or are we still waiting for shipment?

I didn't get in on this group buy--out of country--but ordered a pair direct. Thorley sent me an email stating that the headers would be shipped this week. I'm assuming we're all in the same production run. 2004 4.7

Looks like we are next friday, 4/15/16, see attachment.

The headers are DONE, and are still at the coating facility that does the ceramic plating. Same plating facility that also plates Gibson's headers, and JBA's headers. So, next Friday it seems. I have no control over this, and am just relaying what info I get.

This is really disappointing...I'll have to reschedule my installation for the 3rd time. Next time can we firm up the shipping dates PRIOR to purchasing? I don't think anyone imagined this taking 8 weeks.

I'm just relaying what Doug Thorley told me. In this case, it's the ceramic plating company that said they'd be delivering them back to Doug Thorley last friday and they had a delay. I know, it sucks. They promised they are delivering this Friday to DT, which means they should ship THIS Friday from DT to you. I've also already paid for all current orders myself and just want to get them to you guys asap. Trust me, I'm on top of this and will send FEDEX trackings as soon as I get them, which should be this Friday. Crossing fingers.

Aint on you or DT. Sounds like the plating company needs to get its arse in gear.

If ordered this week, when would I expect to receive these? Building up our 05 and have to have it ready for events next month...
