05-09 4.7L Doug Thorley Headers, group buy

Yep that will work fine. What I am working on is the section that is between the header collector and y-pipe flange. I will supply a flange for you to have welded to your DT header. Once that is in place its bolt in ready. This will give the DIY folks a 1K install savings =-) There will be a few options for high flow cat or a race pipe bolt in. The nice thing is it will be modular.. swap them out as needed without the need to remove the headers.

It seems like two pieces, header and connection to y pipe, would make finagling it in a lot easier. Plus I won't have to make a template. Count me in.

Yeah the installation should be easier considering you wont have the bottom section/cat in the way when you are attaching the DT header to the head.

I am in the process of putting together a bolt in kit for the DT headers and was curious if any of the folks on this thread have their cracked or old factory manifolds (05-09) that they would part with so that I can put together a jig and fab some up. Hit me up with a PM here if you have a set you no longer need or are willing to sell. Thanks

I put out a request on the WTB forum for a set of factory manifolds. If anyone has a set PM me I would like to take them off of your hands.

Just curious, what would be the ETA to market on this idea. I think its a great idea btw as backyard grease monkey who doesn't have access to a welder or know how to weld for that matter.

Thanks

I just sent him T-mans old manifolds and my jigs last week so all he has are some considerable labor hours ahead of him to figure it all out. Would be really cool to help out backyard wrenchers with this item though, if I didn't know someone that could weld stainless I would have been SOL.

Would be totally helpful! I feel like for the $1,000 in labor I would have much rather just bought new catalytic converters that bolt on and do the install myself. Not sure why doug thorley didnt go this route.

Emissions testing is expensive! They provide headers without the catalyst and leave it up to you because if they made a full version that was straight piped they would have just as many people complaining that they wanted a catalyzed 50 state legal version too.

Still loving the power and sound from mine, have not realized any fuel economy gain though... :whip2:

What C. converters do people go with when they replace or upgrade? magnaflow?

I noticed that when I cut the end off of my factory cats they looked Identical to the magnaflow high flow. I could see the same amount of light through them. They are high flow as well, however the inlet pipe on them is much much smaller, hence the restriction. But when you cut them off up on the flange where DT says to, it opens them up the same as the magnaflow, and the same size as the outlet on the headers.

I would not hesitate to use the factory cats after seeing them BUT, given the difficulty of the job to install the headers, I did not want to weld and reinstall cats with 120,000 miles on them.

A better way as stated would be to weld flanges on the DT headers and bolt the cats on. There is plenty of room. If I would have known this and been prepared with the right parts I definitely would have done it, but it is my daily driver and I couldn't be down a few more days to get the parts in.

Just curious, will there be an option to get a DT header with flange already pre welded? Basically a weld-free complete bolt on setup? Because that would be great. I would guess a few members here would want it depending on price.

I'm not near my Runner right now but don't we have two of those cats?

Yes. They are integrated with the factory exhaust manifolds.

#1 and #2

I should be getting a set of headers here shortly and get it all mocked up. Realistically, I should have something together in a month's time frame if all goes well. Things have been pretty busy for me lately. Yeah this should help the DIY folks quiet a bit. Hopefully, the install should be easier as well.
